What happens if a server goes down or a server keeper decides they want to modify some post or comment? It doesn’t seem much different from what spez did, except now you put everything in the hand of another random person. Legal issues are potentially even worse in this case because there is no company behind the site to blame for their wrongdoings.

You put everything in the hands of many random people :). This is fundamentally no worse than the situation with Reddit.

Maybe I’m missing something here but it doesn’t seem like you can post to the communities of other instances.

That is not correct. I'm not sure what issue you're having, but if you give more details about what you've tried maybe we can help.

Alternatively: create the same community in your instance? That would just make useless duplications or even separate instances even more…

Again, no different from the current state of reddit, you just have many Gaming@whatever instances instead of /r/gaming, r/truegaming/, /r/really_true_gaming_for_real, etc.

There are absolutely rough edges here, but to be honest I think a lot of people either weren't around or don't remember the early days of Reddit. There were a lot of rough edges back then too.

I'm no expert, but I do believe the idea is that these things will have to sort themselves out based on community trust.

If a server goes down... Your account goes down. Migrate to another one, hopefully exporting your settings. There's no total profile karma so that shouldn't matter.

If a community/server is horrible, the main servers might blacklist it. If a server owner edits people's comments, people will likely notice and warn others to move away from that server.

In that regard, it's not different than trusting any other internet forum - some quite big ones had quite particular admins that would do everything from leaking personal info to editing posts. At the same time, the ones with trusted management and good communities are more likely to grow and create positive relationships with other servers. The appearance of better Lemmy apps could also help with filtering.

Mastodon and Lemmy are both in the Fediverse, but they don't work seamlessly with each other.

There are issues on GitHub about making them work together better.

Might be a better experience to use Lemmy from Lemmy for now.

On the point of multiple accounts, instead of making several across instances you can follow communities in other instances by searching for them with a "!" In front of them (e.g. [email protected]), then following the community (I am coming from friendica, so maybe their implementation is more simplified). In my experience this works pretty nicely, but it can take some time for old posts to be retrieved by your instance. I'm not sure why this is, so if anyone who understands better can come in to comment it would be useful!

I'm not from your instance, and I can post here just fine. You can also post into mine, unless something's not working properly. Have you tried posting elsewhere?
