In Norway, it's the first question people will ask when you meet them. I consider the question "inform me how much respect I should give you". I read on Reddit that a good response would be "I'm retired". I tried it, and people were like "so you're on disability?" "No, I'm financially retired" and they looked stunned. Try it. It's amazing!
Also, I don't give a shot what people do for work. I'm way more interested what their hobbies are, if they're a good person etc. A job does, in most cases, not define a person.
I do, however, find musicians really interesting to talk to, since I'm very interested in music (listening, not playing myself).
