Pro tip: set your home instance, so links open there directly and you can subscribe from the sidebar. It’s possible to run into errors if the server doesn’t know the other one, but those should be resolved by refreshing.

You should know this because finding communities on lemmy can be tough.

I've been working on this for a couple weeks now, if you've not seen it then it lets you search/filter communities and instances on all Lemmy instances.

Currently over 1k instances and 26k communities! We're growing hella fast!

All open-source and up on GitHub

Instance and Community Explorer for Lemmy

Today we learned about Lemmy Explorer, a Lemmy instance and community search tool. It uses a crawler to collect information from Lemmy Fediverse servers, scanning each server once every 12 hours. With this tool you can sort your searches by more criteria than the community search at feddit.de:

  • Subscriber Count
  • Active User Count
  • Post Count
  • Comment Count

The default sorting method is called "Smart Sort," which we haven't been able to find documentation about yet.

A quick search for an Apple community yields strange results. [email protected] shows up first when sorted by posts, but [email protected] is the second search result, which merely mentions Apple Wallet in their sidebar and has nothing to do with Apple. Sixth on the list is [email protected], which doesn't even mention Apple anywhere -- sidebar or otherwise.

Right now it looks like this is another way to see Lemmy servers and communities, but probably not the best method to compare them to each other and find the right community for you. For now let's call it another arrow in the quiver, but not the best search tool.

For those who are unaware lemmyverse is a good search for communities across all the federated instances

Instruction: everyone who are smart enough to be here should be smart enough to use lemmyverse

p.s. not affiliated, just that this is a cool thing to shar

This tool will let you find communities from all over the fediverse.

To add a community:

  • Find the community you want on lemmyverse
  • Click the link (has the box with an arrow pointing out of it)
  • Copy the URL of the page it sends you to
  • Navigate back to https://lemmy.comfysnug.space
  • Go to the search page
  • Paste the URL into the search bar
  • Click Search

Often times, it should show up as a search result. If not, hard refresh the lemmy page and search a second time. This is necessary if the server didn't know about the community before to actually show the result, since federation does take some time.
