It's that time again Lemmings.

Don't forget to clear your Liftoff cache. Liftoff currently doesn not have a auto clear cache feature.

For those who don't know how, Android instructions are below

  1. Long hold the Liftoff icon and select App Info
  2. Select Storage and Cache
  3. Press Clear Cache

Feel free to share your cache size and not compare our addictions.

Ok, I have a feature request...

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago

Don't we all mate. There already is a GitHub issue for it.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Wtf .. 16gb .. please prioritise that feature.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

I had 27Gb damn...

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

8 gigs. Thanks for the reminder! Is this app still developed? I know that the developer got children and strives to continue, but sometimes life goes a different way. :)

Not even a user but thanks for this post. My Thunder was at 8.6GB, guess that one needs an auto clear too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

About the same size for my Thunder too.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

21GB, thanks for the heads up! Didn't know this was a thing

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

1.67 gbs. Haven't cleared since last time this reminder was posted. Thanks again

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

3.3Gb, nice

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Thanks OP! 10.5GB

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I have Android 7, which doesn't have this feature ... do I need to clear the cache too? If so, does that mean I have to reinstall the app?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you go into settings->applications->liftoff you should see it in there. Cache clearing has been around as long as I can remember

[–] LucyLastic 4 points 1 year ago

Thanks, I found it now, I was looking under the wrong part of the app's settings :-/

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cache clearing was a thing in 7

Settings -> Apps -> LiftOff -> Storage -> clear cache.

[–] LucyLastic 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you, I was looking at the wrong bit where it said permissions/storage. Turns out I had just shy of 8Gb there!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

You guys Lemmy hard.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Thanks doe the reminder, didn't know about this! I had over 5 gig.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Only 2GB... Since android 14 update bricked my phone a couple of weeks ago.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Ah hello friend, I feel your pain 😢

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Does it clear the cache whenever there's an update or something? Because mine only uses 60MB, an i never cleared it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe some optimisation by your phone? I've seen phones that suggest regularly cleaning unused files (xiaomi or huawei, not sure).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

That might be it, I have a huawei.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

6.7 Gb. I think I cleared it about a month ago

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

3.48 -- less than I expected honestly.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Holy crap I have 13.23 gigs. What is stored in the cache? Do I lose anything when I clear it?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

When Liftoff loads a picture or video the file has to be stored somewhere on the device for it to be displayed. All that is stored in the Liftoff cache. You should not loose data by clearing your cache as the cache is suppose to be a temporary storage location.

If you have downloaded things from lemmy via liftoff those files will be unaffected as they are stored elsewhere.

Well... good to know! 7 gigs for me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I know this is the community specifically for the Liftoff app, but thought I'd mention Eternity which I find to be quite a similar experience and has better cache handling - it has a configurable limit and sticks to it. So, if this functionality is important to you, it might be worth trying out an alternative until Liftoff has a solution.

Holy maccaroni

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Hot damn man, thank you, doesn't exist some way to automate this every now and then?

[–] spiritedpause 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Is this an issue for the iOS app as well? I'm guessing it's not, since mine is only using 80mb of space.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, but there’s no way of manually clearing the cache. On iOS the app (if it’s in the App Store) must either manage the cache automatically or allow the user to set a cache size limit.

If it gets out of hand (see Settings/General/iPhone Storage) You’d need to uninstall the app, restart your phone and re-install.
