That is their origin but they mean different things.

The founders set that up because they followed the biblical admonition of what a civil society is supposed to look like.

Uh, no, they were pretty explicit about the whole "separation of church and state" thing. It's right there in the OG Constitution, and clarified in the Amendments.

They went with the structure they did because that's what was being discussed in academic circles at the time.
