So I was talking to a coworker and he said auger bits suck because the screw tip wears down after a couple weeks and thus they're worthless. He said paddle bits without the screw tip are the way to go. I'm still a little green so let me know what you think.

Both serve different purposes. If you try and start a paddle bit without a screw tip you're just going to make the bit jump around a lot. I don't know that I've even seen a paddle bit without a starting tip.
