Its funny how both Reddit and Twitch announce API or policy changes that creates mass discussion within their respective communities regarding longevity and user experience. Both companies are doing shitty things for the $$$ and simultaneously creating mass exodus(es?) to other platforms.

What I find most interesting, is the announcements were made during a similar time frame and both plan to implement their changes on July 1st. I think thats pretty suspect? Almost as if a shareholder has their hand in both their pockets making a big push at once.

What are all of your thoughts on this? Im curious to hear some other perspectives!

If I'm right, Twitch is implementing a mandatory adspace onto every stream. It will be placed in one of the stream's corner.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

So you cant advertise within the stream. Or in twitches words, โ€œhaving ads baked into the videoโ€.

They're doing it so that THEY can do it and not the streamer, which means they have a monopoly on whats advertised and how the sponsorship money is distributed. They're also putting strict policy changes onto what can and cant be advertised. Some of the things they're denying advertisement for is politics, vapes, drugs and DRUG REHABILITATION/RECOVERY SERVICES and other things. Some of that is understandable and soem of it not so much, but some of it is kinda messed up when you consider they allowing the advertisement of alcohol, but NOT drug recovery services.

Sorry I forgot to paragraph there. Iโ€™m not explaining it well but a quick google or youtube search will give you more in depth idea at whats going on!

I think it was bound to happen once they got BC funding. Honestly it's probably for the best, as it's like ripping a band aid off. If they hadn't caused all of this turmoil at once, we likely wouldnt have seen such a big migration here.

Truuue. Im quite happy to see an influx of people turning to decentralisation and FOSS!

What's crazy is Twitch actually folded and Reddit is being stubborn. They still have some sneaky lines in their TOS, but it seems they aren't going to enforce them like YT.

Capitalism is what capitalism does.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah , tis inevitable that this type of stuff would happen when capitalism.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, I dunno... Twitter seemingly intentionally committing suicide too, all in such a short amount of time.

My tinfoil hat wearing side wonders if this is all coordinated because of the election coming up next year, but the more likely explanation is interest rates and tightening capital forcing these shitty new monetize-at-all-costs actions.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

My tinfoil had said Elon was preparing for a republican primary in the next decade ๐Ÿ˜†

But it will be interesting to see what political parties and propaganda will try to spread for the next US election on those social media platforms.

I thought I read since younger people use TikTok, and young people don't vote, there was no urgency to manipulate that format

no, it's horrible. and they feel like they can get away with it.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It is horrible. Obviously i use funny in a way that i dont think its actually funny.

They feel they can get away with it because unfortunately in today socio-economical-political climate they CAN get away with it for the most part. Theres still gonna be twitch streamers who feel like they have no option but to continue streaming on that platform, and redditors who dont really care about the API change and dont mind New reddit & the official app.

Those groups allow them to get away. Theyโ€™ll die at some point, but not yet unfortunately.

Netflix recently started cracking down on password sharing, people too thought it'd be the end of Netflix. But here we are, with Netflix still around and having record breaking signups.

So I'm guessing other companies realized that they can milk more money from people.

In Twitches case I think its a good thing. People will go to different services and there'll be some good competition, same with Reddit.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeahh definitely. I dont use reddit or twitch (i didnt use twitch much to begin with). And i seldom use netflix, i have a profile on my familys account we share.

If i didnt have access to it i wouldnt be missing much

Seems inevitable at some point for any social media that reached a monopoly in its segment

[โ€“] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they are not stupid and they made it happen for some monetary reason, they made it look like they are loosing to hide what they are gaining.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

True yeah. Im just hoping more people move off these kind of websites to be honest. Shame to see more money go to them.
