Stage 21 : Rome – Rome, 143 km (Sunday 1 June, dep. 16h06-16h26, ETA 18h40-18h55)

Very short parade-stage, for sprinters

Stage without difficulties, 50 points to the winner.

The '3 km' rule applies for falls/incidents within 5 km from the finish.

Only splits larger or equal to 3 seconds are counted.

Delays : 7% if ≤ 40 km/h; 8% if ≤ 45 km/h; 10% otherwise. Expected average speeds: 41 km/h ⇒ 11'50'', 43 km/h ⇒ 11'12'', 45 km/h ⇒ 10'56''.

This stage will be raced in the end of the afternoon.

Beware of delays for riders who would crash, they are really short, which is a bit stupid for a last stage! (On the other hand, the circuit is short: a bit under 10 km, so being OTL is sort of equivalent to being lapped.)

The sprint is 2-3% uphill iirc, maybe hard enough for a Mads Pedersen win? It's doubtful but not entirely unlikely.

Stage 20: Verrès – Sestrière, 205 km (Saturday 31, dep. 10:45-10:50, ETA 15:55-16:35)

Long mountain stage with includes the Cima Coppi and a final climb.

Stage with high difficulties, 15 points to the winner.

The 3 km rule doesn’t apply.

Delays: 16% if ≤ 30 km/h; 17% if ≤ 34 km/h; 18% otherwise. Expected average speeds: 36 km/h ⇒ 1h01'55'', 38 km/h ⇒ 58'19'', 40 km/h ⇒ 54'54''.

Beware, the stage finishes 1 hour earlier than others (to that effect, it starts earlier too).

I'm really happy for yates though. I cant imagine carrying that 2018 loss in your mind for so long. Or maybe he already overcame that psychological barrier.

Also, del toro didnt mention having bad legs in the finish line interview..... He just wanted to gamble that carapaz would defend his second place????

It's like UAE told Del Toro to stick to Carapaz's wheel during the prerace bus meeting. And then UAE and Del Toro just stayed the course despite everything.

A+ for sticking to the plan, F- for adaptability.

Del Toro's sprint at the line was cringe to watch. Like, bro, burn that energy earlier when it mattered.

Everyone is able to do a 5 second flat sprint no matter how tired... It doesnt mean you didnt empty the tank on a climb...

Unsure if Carapaz will give it another go. I think he'll probably be satisfied with second and not attack all out unless del Toro shows clear signs of weakness.

In other words, not a super aggressive stage.

I guess Carapaz will at least try a little something. I hope a much bigger/earlier one than the 200 m long attack of yesterday in the last (2?) km of the climb before the final one, but we'll see.

But one scenario is missing! We didn't have yet the traditional Giro riders strike! It's gotta be today or tomorrow 🤣

That was a hell of a stage. Del Toro was either close to cooked or simply not smart tactically. Carapaz was smart to sit up and wait for Del Toro to panic chase, but it just never happened.

He didn't seem cooked to me at any point, therefore the second option should be the right one.

Imagine losing a Grand Tour you lead with some margin: not because you have not the legs and are overpowered in the long run or on multiple short attacks or on an unfavourable terrain; not because you have a bad day on the wrong day; not because there are natural or provoked circumstances that put you in a catastrophic situation; but just because you and your team are a bunch of wallies. 🤣

Has to be the worst day on the car ever for the DS team at UAE. And conversely the best day ever for whoever was in the Visma car, I hope it's Jesper Mørkøv (brother of Michael Mørkøv who is now Danish national team coach).

Stage 19: Bielle – Champoluc, 166 km (Friday 30, dep. 12:20-12:30, ETA 16:55-17:35)

Mountain stage with many long climbs.

Stage with high difficulties, 15 points to the winner.

The 3 km rule applies for falls/incidents in the finish.

Delays: 16% if ≤ 30 km/h; 17% if ≤ 34 km/h; 18% otherwise. Expected average speeds: 33 km/h ⇒ 51'41'', 35 km/h ⇒ 51'30'', 37 km/h ⇒ 58'06''.

If I am not mistaken, this stage grants a maximum of 147 mountain points, and the next one 80 points. That's 227 points. Fortunato (🇮🇹 Astana) has got 355 points, his teammate Scaroni🇮🇹 161, and the first non-Astana only 66. Therefore Fortunato has an advance of 289 points over the first non-Astana , which is already enough to ensure that the Blue Jersey will go to Astana.

For points classification, Pedersen (🇩🇰 Lidl-Trek) is 141 points ahead of Kooij. There are still 152 points for grab in theory, but that would require Kooij (🇳🇱 Visma) to win the 2 mountain stages on top of the final one and all the intermediate sprints (without Pedersen scoring more than a handful). 😁 So the Cyclamen Jersey will go to Pedersen.

The intermediate sprints classification, the Red Bull KM sprints classification, and the breakaway classification are still undecided.

Stage 18 : Morbegno – Cesano Maderno, 144 km (Thursday 29, dep. 13:50-14:00, ETA 17:00-17:20)

Very short stage.

Stage without difficulties, 50 points to the winner.

The '3 km' rule applies for falls/incidents within 5 km from the finish.

Only splits larger or equal to 3 seconds are counted.

Delays : 7% if ≤ 40 km/h; 8% if ≤ 45 km/h; 10% otherwise. Expected average speeds: 43 km/h ⇒ 16'05'', 45 km/h ⇒ 15'22'', 47 km/h ⇒ 18'18''.

Despite its classification, this stage contains several difficulties, though none in the last 60 km.

During the breakaway, one Jayco tried to break from the big group after several mountain tops / intermediate sprints, with the guys who disputed the points. But each time, all refused: they just wanted to get back inside the big group, from which they just popped now and then to grab the points.

Denz (🇩🇪 Bora) had shown he was strong(er) earlier: he wasn't originally in the group of 8 or 9 which managed to separate from the big group. He had to jump solo, as one or two others guys, to catch up with the new group.

Stage 17: San Michele all'Adige – Bormio, 155 km (Wednesday 28, dep. 12:50-13:00, ETA 16:55-17:30)

Another mountain stage, with 2 long climbs around the middle of the stage.

Stage with high difficulties, 15 points to the winner.

The 3 km rule applies for falls/incidents in the finish.

Delays : 19% if ≤ 30 km/h; 21% if ≤ 34 km/h; 22% otherwise. Expected average speeds: 35 km/h ⇒ 58'58'', 37 km/h ⇒ 55'26'', 39 km/h ⇒ 52'14''.

really surprised houle was able to stay in the GC group and help derek gee all the way to the last climb.... if frigo and houle stay in good form to support on stages 19 and 20.... i have a good feeling!

What a stage. A pity for Roglic but so many contenders for the overall victory. Simon Yates sneaked out of the shadows and Pellizzari could show what he is capable of! And after 15 stages without an Italian victory, such a nice hat trick 🇮🇹

Pumped for what’s to come in the last stages!

What a stage. A pity for Roglic but so many contenders for the overall victory.

4^th^ crash for Roglitch in less than 10 days. I don't suppose this one was especially hard (I didn't see it), but the accumulation made him throw the towel.

There was basically no group in the last climb. Almost everyone was climbing alone or in temporary groups of 2 or 3. In fact that's not even the first time on this Giro, that the race goes like this. Despite the supposed power/domination of the UAE team, they have mostly appeared to lead by applying fake pacing when nobody else wanted to lead; real pulling was most of the time done by Trek, Ineos, EF and a couple of other teams depending on the stage.

It is much, much more open that it was expected to be. Of course, crashes played a rather important role in this, unfortunately.

Pellizzari could show what he is capable of!

Contrarily to him, Del Toro looked uneasy with his new role. Whereas he was shining the previous week when he could jump upon anyone, without any worry about negative consequences as he wasn't his team's official leader (if he blew up / failed at catching up with some attacker, nobody would have blamed him), now that he must be more careful, it gets more difficult.

And after 15 stages without an Italian victory, such a nice hat trick 🇮🇹

Another kind of trick was played by French riders: the first one came 32^nd^ after over 13 minutes. Sigh...

I see that Piganzolli (🇮🇹 Polti) came 18^th^ at 5 minutes. That's not bad, especially considering that 5 of the guys ahead of him were in the breakaway: that's (sort of) an equivalent of a 13^th^ place from the leaders' group.
