Harvard, specifically, can no longer enroll foreign students? But other universities can?
This seems like an EO version of a bill of attainder. IANAL, but shouldn't this be a job for the judiciary rather than the executive branch?
A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Welcome to Trump's America. We live in a dictatorship now.
kind of cute that you think the USA still has a working legal system
"Harvard had plenty of opportunity to do the right thing. It refused."
No. Harvard IS doing the right thing, and this fascist administration is punishing them for it.
Fuck off, Noem.
I wonder if her asshole gets worn out from Steven Miller using her like the puppet she is
Hey, Chuck Schumer. Has he crossed the line to where you feel it's necessary to do something yet?
He's too busy working out how to do more for his real constituency: israel.
He gave a speech and or comment the other day where he said in regards to all of the bullshit power grabs are going on, paraphrasing here, that they better be careful because the shoe is going to be on the other foot one day. That the Republicans won't be the majority forever and someday the Democrats will be and then they can take advantage of all these changes and rules. I heard that and I just fuck. First of all no it won't. Second of all Chuck wouldn't know what to do with it if it was. Third, just please shut up and die already you God damn dinosaur.
I've despised him ever since he collaborated with the clumsy Republican smear campaign to destroy Al Franken's career. Franken is 100x the man and senator than that weak, spineless, insipid Schumer will ever be.
He's getting his finger ready for a stern wagging.
isnt he pro-israel, so he probably doesnt see anything wrong with this.
Harvard says the administration's move is unlawful.
And most likely, it is.
However, for a foreign student to enter the US currently to study (presumably for several years) does kind of feel like jumping onto a hovercraft crewed by eels.
If I was a foreign student, I would not be looking at U.S. schools.
Which is the exact intention here... The chilling effect. Whether or not it holds up in court isn't as important as making our country an undesirable place (in this case, for the most intelligent students in the world) to come to.
Really smart, long term thinking there.
Canada has good universities, and you won't end up in a concentration camp.
you won't end up in a concentration camp
A slogan for the brochure!
they will mostly choose a university in europe and work from there from now on. probably something in the UK?>
This is a tobacconist!
I will not buy this tobacconist, it is scratched.
Do you waaaant to come back to my place? Bouncy bouncy!
I am no longer infected.
Trump is pure evil, he is only driven by greed and revenge.
American society has become sociopathic from decades of extreme right sociopathic propaganda, which is why Trump is allowed to continue. USA has collapsed morally, and is now collapsing politically.
It shall be interesting to see how this develops.
We are cursed to live in interesting times, so we might as well embrace it, and be entertained.
I've been warning about this moral collapse of USA for more than 20 years, but after Trump getting elected twice, I'm not sure I actually give a shit anymore.
The rest of the world will just have to move on independent of USA.
It's not just Trump, and it's not most of American society.
This is the Jim Crow South reasserting its control over America.
even before the conservative(buying) take over of most of the MSMs, they were already most leaning right wing in some form of another. America never had a chance.
Yes they still can, it might just not be legal. This is America.
Why would an international student want come to the US when they could be deported or imprisoned any day? Or if they leave the country for a trip might not be allowed back in to finish their degree?
Because thousands of them started their studies years ago, and want to finish the degree they paid a lot of money for. This also affects current students
It’s the ones who are already here who are most worried.
This dude is so sad and pathetic.
Says trump. Maybe if just ignored him...
