Everywhere I look that says "original triliogy" it's always the second re-mastering, never the remastering that was released in the 1990s or the original un-remastered versions

You want either, the Despecialized editions, or the Project 4k77/80/83. Despecialized is an older effort and is slightly more noisy with lower resolution whereas the Project 4k versions are what you'd expect. Both are as close to original theatrical release as you would want.

The despecialized version includes extra content though, don't know if Project ... does as well

Another vote for Project4K77 (and 80, and 83). Watched the first film last week from it and it looked fantastic.

Yeah I've never properly formatted a magnet for lemmy

At first I thought you were talking about some edition that the UN remastered and was really confused.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

No, they did the prequel trilogy because they're really into the bureaucracy

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago

I think you want to look for Project 4k77 stuff, I seem to remember that was restored from the original reels or something

Search for the de-specialized editions. I think those may be as close to the theatrical releases as one can get these days.

Edit: I think the un-mastered ones you mention are what I’m describing, sorry.

Honestly your best bet is to find a DVD/VHS box set and rip them yourself. Everyone keeps the 1080 versions these days at a minimum, and i don't know if those versions were ever release in HD, though here's hoping some can come in with Cunningham's law.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A VHS/DVD rip is rarely a "best bet". There are exceptions, of course, but for Star Wars? Nah.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey I'm right there with you, I have the bluray releases for mine. OP though is after a specific version, which I think was ever available in HD.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Officially, aye, but this is piracy board. Fans have scanned the film itself and made it available illicitly. Project 4K77 looks fantastic, for example.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 23 hours ago

I'm with you, my original point was that I wasn't aware of any rips that fot OPs criteria, and that they might be better off doing that legwork themselves.

I have copies of the second remastering box set that came included with the original un-remastered editions. What do I use to copy off those?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 hours ago

Oh the dvds with laserdisc scan? That's a very neat thing to have!

Would still recommend 4k77 😅

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Handbrake is a handy video transcoder to get you started

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Were they ever released on DVD? I have the VHS tapes. I thought the best quality version was laserdisc. Beyond that, they were all the remastered editions.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

That's where I'm not sure. According to wikipedia, no. So then yeah, laserdisc would provide the best image for those releases at 425, but a PAL laserdisc would give 440, in contrast to VHSs NTSC resolution of 240. That said, the 90s release was itself a 20th anniversary remaster of the originals, though allegedly there exists a copy for long term preservation that was never released. But, I'd have sworn that the 20th remaster saw a limited release on DVD, but that would again be something to be found on eBay or from a collector if it exists.

I thought the first Star Wars DVD was the Phantom Menace in 2001, and the original (remastered) trilogy weren't released on DVD until 2004.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

You are looking for the despecialized edition of star wars.
