I mean that's the problem though, right? The meme is explicitly about acknowledging friendship. Mat should be "Yes, but go away."

Beware that the chapters are usually written from the POV of the characters, Matt is a very unreliable narrator.
So, if I claim I'm your friend, but I actively avoid seeing you, constantly say that I don't want to be near you and come to help you only because I think I have to, not because you're involved, would you put much weight on me saying I consider you friend?
This sort of thing happens in real life too - people are friends, then one moves on to a different phase of life and while they both feel they're not really friends anymore, both cling to the idea that they are because if they admit they aren't, it makes it definitive and something you have to face.
