Chronological Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy 3 (6) were games that were just filled with content and story. They literally don't make them like this anymore.

Idk, there's been plenty of good games, even jrpgs after Chrono trigger

I last had this experience with Nier Automata. Fantastic game, great rpg, throws you curve ball after curveball.

Mostly people are nostalgic for specific games because they played them in a special time in their lifes. Those early teens where you start to appreciate more complex stories, where you have the time and motivation to spend hundreds of hours on a game over a summer, maybe with your friends sitting near you all experiencing the game together for the first time. And as bitter as it sounds: There might be better games around now, but no game will be able to give you that experience.

For sure. But the article frames the game as this super special unique game. Which is argue is not the case.

(I love Chrono trigger)

IMO the biggest appeal of Chrono Trigger is the balance between a well-made story and gameplay that encourages exploration,

It was a golden era of video games that required imagination and literacy.

They mention Sea of Stars, I'll mention I am Setsuna. I didn't finish either one. What I'm looking for is apparently not something like Chrono Trigger, but something of the same quality. Chained Echoes is what I would recommend to anybody that's looking for that.

And I can't replay it, I've tried. It damages my memories of it too much.

Think I'd be good going in fresh? I played it in the 90s long enough to be impressed by the music but that is all I can remember.

I'm not sure why he finds it so hard, I think it has aged really really well. It doesn't really have many or any clunky difficult mechanics. Gameplay is fast(for a turn based jrpg), simple, doesn't require long explanations or a guide book, and you don't have to grind like other jrpgs as long as you kill everything on your way to the next story point.

It still looks good and the music is good too. Unless you just don't like 2d sprites or turn based combat even if it's easy, I will wager you'd still enjoy it.

It's never going to be as good as your memories of it

I'm replaying it right now, started about 2 weeks ago and play a bit where I can. The only thing is that I'm playing the PC version and I don't like the controls one bit. If I were to recommend it to anyone, I'd say just stick with an emulated copy.

It was made around the pinnacle of sprite graphics (the ps1 came out soon after, ushering us into the 3d era). Sprite graphics age better than 1st Gen 3D fo sho, the music makes the most of the hardware (tho its chip tunes) but its the art direction that puts it over the top and into greatness. I am am old man lol, i played it when it came out, aaand i replay it every few years or so, take my opinion for what it's worth. Caveats aside i think if you like a good story you'll like chrono trigger

I think so! For me I remember too much of the story and want to hurry up and get to it.

Sure, it's in the app stores now even.

I'd love a rerelease in the style of the Dragon Quest HD-2D versions. Especially with the passing of Toriyama. A small tribute to the man who influenced so much and so many.
