As appropriate for a post about fish I've taken the bait and looked up just what the fuck is going on. It's a barreleye or macropinna microstoma and it's pretty cool.

Some Macropinna microstoma have evolved to have a large snout and an anal fin.

Anal fin is now in my vocabulary.

well if the eyes are inside the skull, it'd better be transparent!

Their also better protected against attacks, clever evolution.

Downside is probably seeing way less clearly but for a mostly pitch black world its plenty.

i equal parts love and hate this kinda thing, seeing the fucked up shit evolution can turn animals into is so morbidly fascinating.

like how barnacles are horrifyingly twisted crabs, if you cut one in half you can see how there's a compressed crustacean inside the shell. They are their own mech pilots, rooted in place, they have no mouth and they must scream.

So what are the things on the front of the face?

Can't get your eyes easily poked if they're behind your skull

I love swimming, but murky waters scare the shit out of me. And of course I feel like a creeper at a public pool. Oh well
