25 Tabs? Yo, my Brave stopped counting open tabs, Firefox is at 82 and Fennek at 69 (nice).

What do you got, a 2015 phone with a GB of RAM?

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Phone was released in 2024 lol

4GB RAM and 6GB of those "extra ram" (aka: internal storage used as "RAM", like the windows pagefile or linux swap partition)

Maybe my Fennec tabs (like 15 tabs) were just too much and the system had to close something... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Yeah, had to use a Moto G34 5G for the last few weeks, it's insane how Android is killing apps left and right with "just" 4GB of RAM. Have apps really gotten that much less efficient?

I seriously just had to look up my phone specs because I haven't thought about memory for like 3 phones now. Man, I do not miss that at all, and wow I've taken it for granted lately.

I've had 3GB since 2017 and it's also felt sufficient all that time

I have 12GB and the same problem, no matter the tab count (I use various Firefox flavors, one with 200+ tabs, one with no tabs, and one with static tabs).

I experience a lesser extend of this problem on my other phone with 4GB of RAM but running Lineage OS.

This annoys me to no end. My phone has more RAM than my previous pc and yet android keeps purging everything from the memory. No matter what settings you tinker with, it keeps doing it. My Lenovo P2 from 2016 "only" had 4gbs of RAM and would keep dozens of apps open and would only purge the memory with a cold boot. I hate what android has become and that it's basically the only other real choice besides apple phones.

I have a rooted phone, is there any tips about that for rooted users ?

My phone has 8gb of ram and can't keep 1 tab loaded at all.

Using tor on a Samsung? Why. "Hey, someone is using tor on one of our phones, let's see what he's doing while we call the FBI"

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Phones are also much easier to fingerprint. You can use tor all you want but unless you're also running something akin to tails as OS you're perfectly uniquely identifiable on the darknet.

I have over a hundred tabs on my phone. It just shows :) in the counter box now

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You use tor as your main browser?

[โ€“] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago

For Lemmy and various anti-government stuff mostly.

For most other thigns, it's just Fennec + VPN.

(Except for like real-id related stuff, like Banking or buying things, for those I just use Chrome over clearnet, I don't even bother with VPN, since they already know who I am)

Like... I don't think Tor is gonna stop targeted surveillance, but why make it easier for surveillance lol, I'll just have to hope they got bigger targets to spend their resources on.

I feel nostalgic of a time with my first Android phone that worked fine with some 256mb of RAM and around 16gb of storage. Now I have way more in both of them, but my phone unloads everything but the current and last app from memory occupying half of that just for itself and the storage, well, isn't mine to begin with for I can only use a small fraction of it even after a factory reset. Times change, websites and apps change too, and Android devs can't predict that, but they made the OS itself just as bloated and self-indulgent as Windows.

I think you meant this

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

It knows you were never going to look at them again anyway

I love how on Android the system may warn your app about memory pressure, but it reserves the right to happily SIGKILL with no warning whatsoever and zero opportunity for recovery.
