Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

842 readers
140 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Reported less than five of this dipshit's posts and he ended up banning me from all of his communities. Doesn't really surprise me. I've known that reports on Lemmy are faulty and Admin only reports, or more control of who receives them has been suggested but Lemmy's devs never listen.

My advice is to just send messages directly to your Admins as well as his admins, then he can't intercept them.

Obvious PTB but also daym those look like a proper collection of alt-right comms, not to mention the ableism. Are these on their own instance?

[–] [email protected] 42 points 2 weeks ago

Nope they're on lemmy.sdf.org. Lots of people are talking about this incident right now, in fact I just posted a comment mentioning as many admins as I could think of to help resolve the situation.

Ah, the "if you're not a transphobe, you're a Nazi" guy. Delightful.

Lemmy devs NEED to take action on this and implement report differentiation. I was banned from some midwest.social communities for similar. Lowly community mods should NOT be able to ban users for reporting instance/TOS offenses.

Or at least a community ban should not prevent you from making reports to admins.

SDF admin finally remembered he has a Lemmy instance, and that fucker is now gone.

Hopefully they implement a little more oversight to avoid more "mods are asleep" situations. You don't need instant response times. But when people start escalating and looking for you on other services entirely, and it still takes over twenty-four hours, over abject blatant bigotry - deputize some mods.

As far as I'm concerned, sdf is gone too. (edit: their Lemmy instance, not the org itself.)

I’ve known that reports on Lemmy are faulty and Admin only reports, or more control of who receives them has been suggested but Lemmy’s devs never listen.

Yeah, the person being reported shouldn't get the report and they currently do if they Mod the forum the post is on or Admin the instance the post is on, the reporter is on and the reportee is on. That's open to abuse.

You also have no control over whether reports federate out to other admins, Carcosa showed that with their bad faith accusations that I was replying to them via reports in [email protected] when I was actually reporting them for being an ass and violating the community's and instance rules. On Mastodon I would've simply unticked the Forward report to Hexbear option, but Lemmy doesn't let you do that, it by default pulls out all the stops to let everyone know it's being reported, with no discretion whatsoever. I'm kinda surprised they don't just make them publicly visible to everyone *sarcasm*.

downside of lemmy is you can delete your vps, buy another one, install yunohost, buy a cheap domain and have your own lemmy instance federating pretty quick/cheap if you get blocked, especially if you use some pay by the hour vps

[–] [email protected] 42 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This person isn't doing that though, they're clearly freebooting off other instances.

I thought instance admins had to approve any new created community. Allowing anyone to create a community without any supervision sounds dumb.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

Nope, as far as I can tell that's not a thing on any instance. You can either have it open or limited to Admins. Reddit has the feature fully open by default. I guess the idea is to encourage people to create the spaces they need/want on demand without fuss.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

idk how long it takes to federate tho I havent gotten very far

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah… that’s not cool.

I have enough on my shoulders right now, but this evening I’ll make sure to check into this and if it hasn’t been handled, I’ll add my voice to the chorus.
(My voice has 0.1% more weight than anyone else’s, because I make monthly donations to their org since joining as a Lemmy user, but I did not sign up to support this.)

It's not a problem with SDF as a whole, it's just one Nazi who created a few communities there. Check out this post from c/fediverse_vs_disinfo: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/37004617

Please change the title, because this seems kinda misleading.

Is it not clear that this person is a massive troll?? People are treating this person like they should follow the rules when their entire schtick is to do nothing but create chaos and anger people. Those communities were created for the purpose of luring people so they could do this exact thing.

I would say this is fucking stupid simply because of how blatantly obvious it is, but the fact that people take them seriously enough to fall for the bait shows that know exactly they’re doing and it is working.

And it looks like there will be little to be done about it. If the admins won’t do anything- it’ll only be a matter of time before the instance is blacklisted, but that type of thing takes a while to happen.
