Is it worth using a VPN in case pirated software like Autocad/Solidworks phones home? (zerobytes.monster)

Trying to set up Autocad/Solidworks for someone, both programs known for phoning home and people often getting legal threats.

I do plan to try to whitelist everything through a firewall for them but wondering if a safer/easier option is to just use a VPN like Proton to help with this or if it would be able to identify the legit location/IP even with the VPN on at all time?
