I love me some piracy, but I don't blame them for taking an anti-piracy stance. Wouldn't want to get wrapped up in any legal issues as a small team surviving on donations.

Can always make an alt account on an instance that isn't blocking it, anyway.

Glad I didn't pick lemmy.world as my homeserver

It's like yall do CrossFit. Any chance you get you have to tell everyone.

My condolences

Yes. It is their right to block whatever they want on their instance. People who are upset by this ban can just move to an instance that is closer to their opinions.

i am going to give a Historically correct answer:

during the cold war, there was a peaceful uprising in the soviets puppet states (mainly hungary i believe).
the soviets decided the way to deal with these people was to send in tanks and slaughter the peacefully protesting civilians

everyone that was excusing the soviets use of Tanks against Civilians was dubbed a "tankie"

Basically, leftists who think no one who calls themselves a leftist/communist/socialist (e.g Stalin) Can do any wrong

Does Lemmy.world have a policy against piracy? It seems like several instances have piracy related communities and a lot of users from elsewhere post to them.

Mine sharing the context? I'm OOTL

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Sure thing. I posted a photo in another comment just a little further down but basically Lemmy.World blocked a couple piracy communities across different instances to protect themselves and their users.

Not sure you meant to reply to my comment?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago

probably gonna move to dbzer0 just for piracy tbh

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Kinda upset they went that way. Probably gonna make my alt my main now.

It's IMO an existential threat for lemmy.world. Sure, a big corporation could handle it, but here we're talking about an instance which will be forced to shut down if copyright lawyers knock at the admins' doors. Federation is a double-edged sword, it means technically you also host all the content that's being published on instances that are federated with you, so in particular if piracy communities don't do a good enough job cleaning up lemmy.world will be liable for that content since it will be physically on this server too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What option do you propose then?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not ban piracy talk and communities?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They did it to avoid legal troubles, they would not get in one yet but almost certainly in the future

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which doesn't make sense. If anything you'll get hit with a DMCA and just ban the communities then. Why start trouble now when there isn't any?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tell that to Nintendo, or see the history of The Pirate Bay

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

And what did Nintendo do? DMCA people? Yes, thats what they did. A DMCA is a piece of paper that says "remove x shit right now". It doesn't mean anything else, its a promise of consequence. The Pirate Bay is in no way similar. Are we hosting content links that directly link to torrents? No? Cool.

But still nothing on Threads...

Just wait until you find out the entire lemmy platform was created by tankies. Stick to kbin imo.

what's happening with .world? I didn't follow the news

[–] Sethayy 3 points 1 year ago

blocked all big piracy communities, is trying to move to discord for all announcements.

Too add my personal opinion like why the fuck, they gain nothing from the discord thing and the piracy thing has been proven pretty safe from email servers operating similarly
