In the spirit of the Ancient Greek Agora, we invite you to join our vibrant community - a contemporary meeting place for the exchange of ideas, inspired by the practices of old. Just as the Agora served as the heart of public life in Ancient Athens, our platform is designed to be the epicenter of meaningful discussion and thought-provoking dialogue.

Here, you are encouraged to speak your mind, share your insights, and engage in stimulating discussions. This is your opportunity to shape and influence our collective journey, just like the free citizens of Athens who gathered at the Agora to make significant decisions that impacted their society.

You're not alone in your quest for knowledge and understanding. In this community, you'll find support from like-minded individuals who, like you, are eager to explore new perspectives, challenge their preconceptions, and grow intellectually.

Remember, every voice matters and your contribution can make a difference. We believe that through open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to discovery, we can foster a community that embodies the democratic spirit of the Agora in our modern world.

Voting History & Results

Currently there is no rule for when a vote is over, or when the vote is tallied. I propose we allow 24 hours from post creation to allow everyone in the community to have a chance to see and consider a proposal and vote. After 24 hours from post creation, the 'polls' would close and the votes can be tallied. Any votes cast after 24 hours would be invalid.

Edit: some good points made, I withdraw this proposal

Locking post as the OP has decided to withdraw their proposal. May I suggest we create another discussion post to debate this further and circle back with another voting post at a later time.

Nay

I agree with the idea that there should be a limit to how long voting is open, for practical reasons, but I think 24 hours is far too short. People's lives are unpredictable and you might not have the chance to properly consider a community like this in that timespan. I think this is an important consideration if we want to foster a community of inclusion. I think a reasonable minimum might be 72 hours, and I would recommend a period closer to seven days.

Nay. It should definitely be more than a day. If there is no limit there is no end to voting, but 24hrs is not long enough.

Nay. Needs a longer time. Maybe a week? Honestly if it's not life and death it can probably wait a week. Also gives a chance for debate if needed.

I think we also need to agree some kind of engagement threshold for passing a vote. Do we really want to be implementing changes on an idea that only got 1 vote for example?

Presumably the mods make the call on whether a vote passes, but there should be a simple test that isn't open to interpretation like 60% of the user base or something. So all they need to do is count the Ayes when the 24hr period ends and work that out as a percentage.

Maybe this needs to be it's own vote at some point.

Perhaps a supermajority system? 50% approval should require at least consideration and response. A more overwhelming majority of support should perhaps carry more weight?

[–] ProstheticBrain 3 points 2 years ago

Agreed, I've started a discussion about this to keep everything together

As it grows it will be hard to reach a majority, we can't force people to subscribe to the Agora as far as I know, so new users won't even know it exists...

Nay for 24 hours, but I think you're right that there should be a clearly defined time limit. Maybe two or three days so more people get a chance to vote?

Nay just cause I think bigger votes like blocking other instances should have a week or something since that's a pretty big decision.

[–] nanoUFO 2 points 2 years ago

Nay a week to give everyone a fair shot on voting.

[–] ProstheticBrain 2 points 2 years ago

Nay, I definitely agree in principal. I just think 24hrs is too short. Might be good to make this a poll?

1: 24hrs 2: 48hrs 3: a week?

~~Aye~~ Nay

Edit: Nay

Think a longer time period like 2-3 days would be a better choice
