This happens because the air heats up so much due to friction that it forms into another state of matter called plasma

Can someone confirm this? I was told the plasma is caused by compression not by friction.

Probably more technically energy. Think you can make plasma with accelerators. But energy is heat anyway basically. Not that I want to make myself out to be an expert because I'm absolutely not. I don't really know.

This is the first time the human race has seen reentry plasma live from external cameras.

Presumably they mean only humans on the ground? Did/do the Shuttle/Soyuz/Dragon have external cams viewable by the astronauts?
