Saw in some article the reason for their lasers not working was they forgot to flip a physical switch on the spacecraft in preflight checkout... Yikes,..

Yup, that must be a pretty embarrassing mistake for whatever hardware team was in charge of that switch. The software team really saved the day on this one. I still can't believe that they rewrote the navigation software on the fly, uploaded it to the lander, and it worked!
