Instead of blacking out communities or making them private why don't moderators just migrate their community to lemmy while keeping the subreddit closed (with the only post on the sub being the link to the lemmy community)?

A bunch have. But it can be difficult to get a whole ton of non technical consumers move to a platform that's unpolished.

I love lemmy. But it can be confusing at first to new users.

I love that one of the naysayers goes by "TeachingImpossible". I first read that as meaning that they're "teaching the impossible", but after reading a few of their comments, I'm guessing it means that teaching them anything is impossible 🤦😂
