Hi!

I see similar posts here from time to time, it's unclear how active this sub is for English speaking people moving or living in Denmark. I would love to get advice or hear about others on their experience moving to Denmark from the US. We are middle-aged and artists, so we have a lot of personal belongings we wish to take with us. We also have two older cats that we refuse to leave behind. My spouse has Danish citizenship and I will be applying for permanent citizenship in Denmark.

Some examples of what I am curious about:

  • where did you get your biometrics done? I am in the PNW and the nearest consulate is in Palo Alto. The ministry of foreign affairs website (in Denmark) doesn't have a working hyperlink to alternate options. We plan on calling them, but that doesn't negate my interest in other's experience
  • if you moved the contents of your home, how did it go? Which relocation service did you use, or did you just ship boxes of personal items?
  • did you fly pets out there, and if so, how did it go?

I have a ton of other questions-- but these are the big ones currently.

Thanks!

If you’re interested there’s also a couple of TikTok accounts from American people who moved to Denmark. I know at least two who post about how they moved, answers questions and explains everything. You can always contacts them privately on TikTok with your questions. Personally I can’t really answer your questions since I did the opposite move

I am going to accept this reality. I got off socials several years ago, FB a lot further back. But Messenger is the preferred medium of digital contact for all my family in DK so...I am the bad family member for not retaining accounts to defer to their preferences.

I started new accounts this week as part of the acceptance process.

I'm in an opposite situation (Dane in Canada) and these types of FB groups are a great resource.

Good luck with your stay in Denmark!

Absolutely love it here. Nothing bad about the old country, but I truly feel happy that I was able to immigrate over here. Nice people, absolutely amazing nature and so much freedom to do what you want (I'm in a rural area, lol). Been her almost 14 years now, never looked back. I fit in here better than I ever did in Denmark.

Thats excellent to hear. My spouse moved to the US in 2001 and had hoped to make this his forever home, but the country has shifted in ways that no longer work for us. We visit Denmark once a year and after the first several visits I started to lobby for us to make it our forever home. It has taken me almost a decade to convince him, but we are finally doing it.

One of the absolute biggest differences for me was the difference in weather and how big the difference sunlight. Look at a map - Denmark is quite up north and unless youre from Alaska, Denmark will have worse weather than where youre from. I know it isnt the end all be all, but its a really big thing for me, and it makes me happy on an almost daily basis that I was able to escape the damned darkness of Denmark. Sounds like you know what youre in for, but its definatly something to consider.

That being said, just got back from a trip to Vancouver (Im in Ontario normally) and it really reminded me of Copenhagen - rain constantly and temps just above freezing. Good luck

Yeah if you like sunny weather Denmark is defiently not for you. We hit record last year with rain and the summer was so awful except May/June and September..otherwise rain rain rain.

Here in Ontario, it may be cold AF, but it's often sunny and crisp. Honestly, -10c here feels close to 0c if its damp and humid.

EarthlingNumberAlot at 2024-01-28 04:27:23+00:00 ID: kjwp0c9

Here in Denmark it’s more often the other way around haha, it’ll be 0c but feel like -5c etc. But since u’re from Ontario (and have visited DK) i wouldn’t be concerned. Imo the negativity of danish weather is exagerrated. Sure, it’s cold - but nothing like Norway, Finland etc. And sure, it’s rainy - but nothing like UK. I think it’s just a cultural thing, we love to be negative of the weather. We do have long dark winters tho, can be depressing but makes spring and summer more enjoyable

It is the darkness in the winter that really kills (killed) me though. Sun comes up at 9am and gone again by 4pm without any real sunlight to speak of. For months on end. Don't get me wrong, I'm not being negative towards Scandinavian culture or anything, but I'll have to admit, when I lived there, the darkness were sucking the soul out of me. Winters now, here in Ontario, are cold but sunny and not much rain/wetness (besides this current winter which is a bit abnormal). Generally it's -10 to -25 with pretty quiet wind and lots of sun. It's quite beautiful. Like I said, I just got back from Vancouver which reminded me a lot about Copenhagen with around 0c and just rain and wetness everywhere. Personally, I'm so happy I'm done with it :)

Ah. The weather in Denmark is 100% right for me. I grew up in a coastal town in Massachusetts and lived in the foggy zones of SF and coastal Marin county in CA for my entire adult life (except the last four years in Portland, OR). I do not like extreme heat and my tolerance for endless days of brutal sunshine is very low. I know that sounds weird to most people, but I thrive in temperate regions.

We have visited Denmark extensively, not as tourists but mainly visiting family. We have been there at different times of year, so I have seen the short winter days and I have fallen asleep with the sun lowering in the sky at 10pm.

My spouse is worried about returning this weather, but we agree that it seems trivial compared to the reasons we have to leave the US.

Thank you for the warning though-- the latitude line Denmark falls on might not mean much to many, but its part of the calculus and we have it in the "pro" column right now.

Good for you guys! Portland probably doesn't seem that off from Denmark. Of course, I can only speak for my self, and yes, it does seem trivial. Have fun in Denmark! My best advice would be to do everything you can to learn the language as fast as possible. It is very important even though everyone speaks English, just my opinion.

I'm not American, but I did import two cats from the US so I know a little bit about that part of your questions.

The cats need to have their rabies shots at least 21 days before they travel. They should also be microchipped and you will have to bring them to a vet to get a vet certificate that shows that they are healthy.

You can ship them as cargo or in some cases you are allowed to bring them in cabin under your seat. That is what I did. They will have to be taken out of their carrier in the airport and the carrier will have to be scanned. Do not take them to the toilet on the plane to let them stretch their legs! A friend of mine did that and nearly lost the cat because there was an opening near the foot panel.

How did your cats eat and deal with litterbox needs?

Years ago I flew a cat from SF to Boston and then a long drive to a city in Maine. He was in the carrier the whole time (12+hours?) and didn't pee etc in the carrier. My vet told me to expect him to shut down a little, which he totally did.

But this time we are traveling from Portland, OR to Copenhagen...wow thats a long time in a carrier.

Thank you for replying!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Tick-Tag at 2024-01-27 20:12:26+00:00 ID: kjun8ey

I didn't feed them. I was afraid it would make them sick and as long as they are traveling less than 24 hours it should be okay. Nothing is ideal, so you should figure out what you are comfortable and what you think will be the best for your cats.

I don't quite remember what I did about the litterbox problem. I might have used a mini litter box but I think that I put a diaper in the bottom of the carrier instead. And then brought extra so I could change it in case they used it. As I remember it, none of them used it.

One of the cats I flew from SF => Chicago => Copenhagen. I think it was around 22 hours. The other one was less. I didn't like it and I was nervous about it but the cats did alright

Do you have your danish residence permit in place? Because its not given you are allowed to stay here just because you are married to a danish citizen.

Getting a danish citizenship will take 5 to 10 years depending on how fast you learn danish and get a full time job. Permanent residency can be done in about 4 years but expect longer.

danish immigration laws are a joke.

a really bad one because you'll go insane like the joker trying to understand them.

you can technically greencard it you just have to learn danish if you use family reunification which would require being married.

We are getting everything together, and yes, we know that this will likely be the biggest paperwork project we have ever taken on. I appreciate your warning and expressing caution.

My spouse thinks that the language proficiency test will be something that I can manage. I am a lot more cautious and do not expect to pass the first time. I am doing what I can to learn right now, but from past experience do not expect to learn or retain much until I am immersed.

Hi! My husband's an American, who moved here 4 years ago. We basically spent a year prepping our papers and stuff, which also meant going over the rules a million times. It's not easy getting a residence permit here even as an American. You have to live up to a bunch of rules, both you and your spouse. You can't just apply for a permanent residency, you start with a temporary one and have to reapply every 2 years or every 4 years. If you haven't already made sure you and your spouse live up to the rules, I encourage you to go to www.newindenmark.dk

When my husband was moving here, we applied in person for family reunification at the immigration services. He had his biometrics taken at the same time. Then it was about a year of him not being allowed to do anything (work, school, volunteer) until we had to put up the 100.000dkk as a guarantee in the bank and then 2 months later he got his 2 year temporary residency. We've since applied once more, which extended his temporary residency to 4 years. It'll be years before he can even try to apply for a permanent residency (usually after 8 years in Denmark +4 years of a full time job + a bunch of other rules).

So my advice would be: make absolutely sure you've read up on the rules. Just because your spouse is a danish citizen does not mean you can just come live in Denmark unfortunately :)

Good luck and all the best!

Thank you for this. This is all info that my Danish spouse concurs with, at least, this is what he is expecting for us to take on.

I am not expecting to work, at least not initially. I need to build our home there, and I will need as much time as possible to learn the language and acclimate to the culture.

One of the reasons (and there are many) we are making this move is that we are both exhausted with the culture and culture wars in the US. I have been lobbying my spouse for years to move back there (with me). I am expecting culture shock once I arrive, but I feel fully prepared for what to expect from living with Danes. I love rules, I love socialism and I love pickled herring.

Did your spouse get the biometrics done in Denmark? My spouse seems to think we have to do it in the US. This is a small but irritating hurdle because the nearest consulate is 650miles away.

Welcome to Denmark. You'll love it.

Bevare of the rules with obtainig citizenship, especially with getting any kind of monetary help from the government. Also for your spouse. This website is good as well as the other one already mentioned in this thread.

What kind of artist are you? Just out of curiocity.

Do you have a place to live and do you know where you will stay? The commune might have websites as well explaining the paperworks.

We don't yet have a place to live and that part is the most stressful. My spouse is looking for jobs now. Once that part is established we will have the city/region identified and we can get on the waiting list for housing options. We understand that we may have to rent from a private listing before we can rent or buy from a nonprofit.

We have family and friends there, mainly in Odense and Aarhus. So he is relying on their hospitality during the pre-moving process.

My spouse is expecting us to land in the Nordborg and Sønderborg area, which I am not familiar with. I was hoping to be closer to Aarhus, but we will go where the employment is.
