You have to copy the link to a community (or post or comment), go to the search bar, make sure the search is set to "All" and not "Communities," then paste the link, search for it, then search for it again. Existing posts and comments won't be synced (unless you search for them), but if you subscribe to a community then alll new posts and comments will be synced to your instance.
Those communities will show up on your instance, so you don't need to leave the website of your instance.

Yeah, I did manage to add them through the web UI, just not through the app... just feels like a lot of switching between apps and a lot of copy/pasteing just so that I can add a community.
