"Conservativism consists of one proposition, to whit; there should exist in groups that the law protects but does not bind, and out groups that the law binds but does not protect."
This remains as true as ever, and naturally leads to the corollary that conservatives tend to stop being conservatives when they find themselves in one of the out groups.
If they were capable empathy for people they don't identify with, they wouldn't be conservatives in the first place.
