Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Well yea they are the party that doesn’t live in reality.

And when we do destroy the planet, all of the rich donors are going to have those lovely little bunkers to fall back on while the rest of us are fucked

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Bunkers aren't gonna do shit if climate change really kicks off. None of those assholes can grow their own food or anything else they would need to do to survive longer than your average prepper. They'll make nice targets for desperate people to spend a lot of resources trying to open though.

This is why Larry Ellison bought almost the entirety of Lānaʻi (and Zuckerberg bought some of the remainder). Not only does it have an eight-mile moat between it and the rest of Hawai‘i, it's also got great climate and fertile volcanic soil. In fact, it was formerly the world's largest pineapple plantation.

Raise your hand if, when the shit goes down, you're going to care about who bought what land.

Now raise your hand if you're going to be re-enacting scenes from the "Mad Max" movie franchise.

yes. but capitalism's main skills are myopia and delusion, and being a billionaire in particular poisons your brain, ruins your perception of scale consequence and responsibility just as it bloats your self opinion.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

all of the rich donors are going to have those lovely little bunkers to fall back on while the rest of us are fucked

I don't think it's about this specific use case. It's about the fact that the minority of ultra wealthy will always have the means and resources to escape the plight of the common folk. Plus any consequences are unlikely to be realized in their own lifetimes, only their kids or grandkids might really be affected.

Even if they are affected they can buy their space station or remote luxury village with ~~slave~~ paid labor. There's not enough resources for everyone to be taken care of, but you can bet your ass they and their families will be taken care of first.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

its not just for their donors.

the suffering is the point, and many of them are literally lovecraftian apocalypse cultists. as bad as jewish zionists may be ('we will riot for the right to rape!') christian zionists (doctrinal religiously zionist, not, like, faschy genocidal racist catholics railing against the woke pope, not that those adjectives look great on anybody) are just straight up horror villains.

Neither party lives in reality. Neither party actually believes in climate change. The Republicans outright deny it and the Democrats do nothing about it. It's not enough to say you believe in climate change, you have to demonstrate that you believe in climate change by behaving as though it is real.

We've got two cars racing toward a cliff. One has the gas pedal weighed down with a cinder block and the driver insists there's no cliff. The driver of the other car says "what an idiot!" as he very intelligently, moderately, and progressively presses his gas pedal halfway down

Neither driver will acknowledge their passengers' pleas to hit the brakes

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

remember half the passengers in your metaphorical car are also screaming to hit the gas harder.

Your ire is misdirected at democrats when you should be talking about the propaganda machine from fossil fuel companies and Fox News brainwashing people into making it a culture war. Democrats do what they can, the problem is they can do very little when most people really don't give a shit (or worse).

[–] [email protected] -1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Democrats do what they can, the problem is they can do very little

Poor little helpless Democrats just can't do anything good because the big bad mean Republicans are stopping them, even when they're the ones in power

How can you be so pathetic lmao, the definition of controlled opposition.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

did you even read the rest of my comment? Also you can't say the democrats are "in power" when passing legislation requires more votes than they actually control. How do you plan to accomplish the kinds of goals you're looking for with less than 60 senate votes?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Motherfucker, you're not understanding. The idea that "I don't have enough votes in this made up fascist government to pass effective climate legislation" means that it's acceptable to give up is climate change denial. This is not a matter where we have the liberty of sitting around and playing nice with fascists for decades on end. We need to make radical change now.

If the rules say that you can't make radical change now then break the rules, if the fascists try to stop you then it's a war. So be it. The alternative is the end of the world.

[–] spidermanchild 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What's this "radical change" and why haven't you made it happen yet? Like what are you actually doing other than shouting into the void about other people doing the wrong thing? Even if someone reads your post and is like "yeah that's right" what are they actually supposed to do next? What rules are we supposed to break?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Before we can do anything, we need an organized group of people who can agree on what needs to be done. Before we have that, we have to identify that what is being done isn't enough. People who believe that the Democrats are doing enough on this topic aren't going to organize with us for radical change.

What are we supposed to do? End the use of fossil fuels and transition to solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, nuclear power in whatever configuration the experts determine is necessary. End the use of cars outside of necessary exceptions and transition most transport to trains and bikes. End animal agriculture. Democrats are not doing these things, do not want to do these things, will not do these things. You have to recognize that Democrats are your enemy just as much as Republicans.

Before we can do anything, we need an organized group of people who can agree on what needs to be done. Before we have that, we have to identify that what is being done isn’t enough.

and to do that, you need to stop the climate change denial propaganda. exactly what I said from the beginning. the government is never going to have power to do anything if half the country is brainwashed.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 months ago (1 children)

the government is never going to have power to do anything if half the country is brainwashed.

Lmao what the fuck are you talking about? Somehow this never stops Republicans from passing all sorts of repugnant legislation, but ask a Democrat to do something good and suddenly passing any legislation ever is impossible

Controlled. Opposition.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

please watch some schoolhouse rock and get back to me.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 months ago

Please read a book.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

means that it’s acceptable to give up

good thing that's not at all what I said.

If the rules say that you can’t make radical change now then break the rules, if the fascists try to stop you then it’s a war. So be it. The alternative is the end of the world.

okay, so you're not talking about functional government anymore, you're talking about revolution. If your plan was to sit back and wait for democrats to do that... lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Yes, of course I'm talking about revolution. That is what is necessary.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Neither party lives in reality.

They know exactly what they are doing. They are saying one thing publicly, but the nitty gritty is that they are enabling the ability to manipulate wealth using the power to choose the winners and the insider knowledge that enables enormous wealth generation. There is a reason why few politicians are poor even if they entered office penniless, and it isn't book deals or speeches.

Politicians are not idiots (usually.) Even the ones who are batshit crazy in the news have another personality that isn't the mass media one. We know next to nothing about public figures and celebrities actual real beliefs or day to day behaviors, we only know the idolized media coverage which is itself tailored to generate more revenue, not deliver facts or do the right thing for humanity.
