Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

I'll be taking a bus to a swing state to help elect Harris this coming weekend. You don't need to do quite that much; there are actions hosted near you to join.

The reason is that while Harris isn't in absolute 100% agreement with me on every detail (unless I run for office, no candidate will be), she's the candidate much closer to taking adequate climate action. The Biden/Harris administration did a lot, starting with Harris casting the deciding vote for the Inflation Reduction Act., a key piece of climate legislation. We even saw major cuts to the leasing of federal lands for coal, as well as big cuts to oil and gas leasing

By contrast, Trump appointed a coal lobbyist to run the EPA and took steps to increase not just greenhouse gas emissions, but a wide variety of human-impacting pollutants, and surrounded by people who want to eliminate any effort to address the climate problem

“Silence is complicity,” Thunberg added. “You cannot be neutral in a genocide.” She is right.

The consequences will be even more catastrophic without urgent action. The water crisis threatens more than 50% of global food production and risks shaving an average of 8% off countries’ GDPs by 2050, with much higher losses of up to 15% projected in low-income countries, the report found.

Climate science has been stymied as Russia continues its war in Ukraine. The stalled work threatens to leave the West without a clear picture of how fast the Earth is heating up.

A new analysis by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) network of scientists found warming driven by the use of fossil fuels had exacerbated the flooding in Sudan. The researchers also said climate change would have made this year's torrential rains around five to 20 percent more intense across the Niger and Lake Chad basins, citing a previous WWA study of similar floods in 2022.

Global warming is not just about rising temperatures -- the extra heat trapped in the atmosphere and seas has knock-on effects and can result in more intense downpours and storms. The researchers said there was a clear link between the extreme rainfall and a warming planet.

The scientists used modelling to compare weather patterns in our world and one without human-induced warming, and found that month-long spells of intense rainfall in parts of Sudan had become heavier and more likely due to climate change. At the current 1.3 degrees Celsius of warming, they said similar periods of rainfall are expected to occur on average about once every three years, and have become about 10 percent heavier due to climate change.

The role of climate change in the floods was compounded by other human-made problems, the researchers said, and they called for better maintenance of dams and investment in early warning systems.

On climate change in particular, wilder talking points are distracting from the small, boring ways a Republican administration could pour money into oil and gas companies’ pockets.
