I've had the same Razor mouse for over 10 years. It helps if you clean them occasionally, don't throw them at the walls, and pay for a good quality one to begin with.

The mice I've had in the past that tend to break have always been wireless mice, the wired ones I've never been an issue.

Soft rubber components always go greasy and sort of melt after 5+ years. Also: got any tips for cleaning? The wheel and button edges in particular are really annoying to clean.

That tacky rubber feeling as the soft rubber ages is disgusting. They only fix that every worked for me is covering it up... I used mouse grip pads, or grip tape.

Once it's gone like that you can't really do anything about it. You have to clean it ahead of time to prevent that happening.

That's what I mean about getting a good quality mouse to begin with, The cheap ones are made of cheapish plastic that will do that eventually.

I only replaced my Razer Diamondback very recently. I remember getting that around the time Half Life 2 came out...

Meanwhile the wife already had to replace the wireless dongle on her two year old Naga Pro.

Yeah, they already kind of last forever if you take care of them. No need to pay any more money. I used a logitech mx1000 for about 10 years, it didn't fully die, but it was getting there. That was through my world of warcraft years. Since then I've been on a logitech g500s, also about 10 years now. I still only have to clean it about once every 2 years when it starts double clicking or not holding a click randomly. Turns out without world of warcraft they last even longer. To "clean" it, I just mash the buttons for about 10 seconds then shake the mouse upside down. Do that a couple times, then wipe up what fell out. Good as new for another 2 years or so.
