He was confident he'd win the election no matter what VP he picked. He was caught off guard by Biden's withdrawal because the thought of giving up his ambitions for the good of the country is incomprehensible to Trump. We're talking about a guy who looks at US military casualties and POWs and thinks "losers."
As someone who'd get him a bunch of big tech dollars for his campaign (legal) expenses and would also do literally anything he was told, Vance probably seemed like the perfect pick.
Well.
He probably won’t stop fucking couches or dolphins. The good news for his handlers is they can control the environment. So at least he won’t be fucking the podium during a campaign rally, or something.
