Reality will break your heart. Survival will not be the hardest part. It’s keeping all your hopes alive, When all the rest of you has died. So let it break your heart.

Well to start off I am a pretty smart guy. I was great in school but also have a passion fro solving problems. I came home to my beautiful fiance and she told me she was having a problem with Excel. So I sat down...for hours... to solve this Excel mystery. For some reason the formula she wrote did not work (before this job she was in communications so Excel is new for her). I was confident that I can solve this. Guess what? My formulas also did not work. Hence the sitting for hours in front of the computer. She eventually got bored and proceed to prepare dinner while I was still trying to crack this. Thankfully, my googling skills from college was still sharp so about an hour a half later the mystery is solved. The formula worked. We celebrated. She poured some wine and the rest is history folks. The TLDR: learn your macros.

Have you ever tried adding coffee to noodles? Or dipped Pizza slices in orange juice? Never ever, I suppose. At least not deliberately, it might have been accidental.

Yes, these combinations sound strange. They indeed are! Because these food items are meant to be separate. You can have one at a time, not together.

For me - these combinations are strange too - looking at your phone or doing something in parallel during a meeting. Responding to emails and chats and notifications during a presentation. Trying to code on the breakfast table. These activities are also meant to be separate, not mixed.

My advice - Stop living in the illusion of ‘parallel’ multi-tasking. Stop these parallel activities, and motivate yourself to focus on one task at a time! Be it at workplace, or in your personal life.

This illusion of multitasking at workplace only adds to chaos. You feel that you are being more productive, by working on tasks in parallel. But in reality, it only adds to more confusion, stress and an uncanny sense of urgency. You will finish the tasks in almost the same time irrespective of whether you do that in parallel, or one-at-a-time.

Note that I am NOT saying that everything has to be sequential. There are some tasks which can be done in parallel. But don’t force yourself into multitasking where it doesn’t make sense.

Let’s take an example. During that 45 mins presentation, you successfully replied to those 45 emails and chat messages, thereby achieving twice the productivity. WRONG! I can bet that you didn’t understand half of what was presented, and you are under-confident in half of those responses - did you really respond appropriately or you made a mistake? And you go back and review some of those. Maybe you make corrections. In total, did you really achieve anything? Think again!

The same applies at your home. Do you take bath while having your breakfast? Do you watch your favourite TV show while driving car? Then why do you talk to your spouse, or play with your kids, while your eyes are submerged in the phone screen? Don’t they deserve your undivided attention? They DO…

Next time you are pouring coffee on noodles, or dipping pizza slice in orange juice - think again.

What's between you and that physically fit body?

• The physical training required. Eating the right amount of food. Getting the right amount of sleep.

What's between you and... becoming a comic book artist? (If that's your thing)

• Physically drawing the comic.

What's between you and becoming financially successful?

• Applying for that high income job, then grinding it out.

Do all that can be done each day. Do the work!

(Also, wake up early. 4am - 5am)

Like, I would spend time studying almost everyday, trying to recall what I learned, redoing exercices, pretending I'm a teacher and pretending I'm teaching this shit to an imaginary student, yet my grades look like I didn't put efforts into this shit. Like, I'd study for nothing. For example, a month ago, in History class, I'd study but wouldn't expect to learn about a word that wasn't in the teacher's courses, during the exam. EVERYONE ACED THIS SHIT EXCEPT ME DESPITE THE FUCKING SACRIFICES I MADE that day! This grade has a huge impact on my score in History, meaning I made sacrifices just to find out my score in history will be SHIT until the end of this fucking semester. On top of that, I mostly get mild grades despite studying, I rarely get a good grade despite studying, I only get a point or three away from failure, or failure most times. I looked for study tips on Reddit, there was that one study tip that I used three times, but it worked only 2/3 times. How do I get courage to continue studying even when I fail so much times?

So I (43F) am a typical "gifted kid" who did extremely well in school without trying particularly hard. I was diagnosed as ADHD at 40 and am on medication.

At the same time, I have a mom who was extremely controlling and a perfectionist bc she truly believes that making one major mistake can ruin your life. I was chewed out for every B, and there were several as I had a 3.6 in high school. (In her case the mistake was dropping out of school to marry Dad and have me & my sis. They divorced when I was 6 and she came out as a lesbian. She has always believed having kids is why she didn't get to follow her dreams).

So, as you might guess I am not confident when things are challenging. However, I'm in a new work situation that I deeply need financially, and it's contract. They're ramping me up so I can learn the format and what they're looking for, and I'm finding it both slower and a bit harder than I expected.

As a result I'm trying to force myself to work more and being very hard on myself at the same time, which has caused me to completely crash today into a "I don't even want to get out of bed" depression (not diagnosed, the informal sort).

How do I stop getting in my own way and embrace challenges instead of being frustrated/angered/embarrassed by them? The world is certainly not getting any easier and I need to get over this!
