Been a Canadian sparky for 6 and half years now, love doing what we do, I’ve got all my schooling complete for the last two years, but I failed my interprovincial exam and I haven’t tried since, starting to study again today as it’s something that pisses me off every single day, the fact that I don’t have my red seal, would just love to hear somebody say, “shut up you pussy hit the books and get that seal you fucking wanker” if you have it in your heart please I could use the encouragement.

Hi all. Been lurking this sub for a while now (maybe 6 months or so). I'm determined to switch careers this Spring and begin an electrician apprenticeship – I'd like to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather, who was an IBEW electrician back in the day. However, due to some unfortunate circumstances at my current company, I might have to try and make the switch sooner than I was planning. But the problem is I'm going to be out of state for a two week vacation pretty soon that's already been booked. Let's say, hypothetically, I land an apprenticeship with a local company before then. Is that vacation time a dealbreaker? Should I just wait until after I've taken the vacation to begin applying for roles? I'm just worried about having an unemployment gap between my current job and the apprenticeship because I might have to leave my current company much sooner than expected due to some outside factors. My original goal was to land an apprenticeship and then put in my two week notice, but that might not be possible now.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I just passed my Arkansas Masters test and I haven't really established what I plan to do with it. It has no benefit for the company I'm currently at, would like to hear some suggestions if anyone has any.

I’m running a big project and I need to find a way to organize my tasks and progress. It’s hard to keep my head wrapped around all the aspects of this particular job.

I have good apprentices, but not anyone I can really give too much responsibility to. So I’ve been drawing out little segments of the job for them to work on. Like literally drawing each pipe in the rack, where it goes, where it needs j boxes, etc.

I have notebooks with lists of things for each print. One for lighting, one for power, data, fire, security, speakers, different floors, etc. I keep track of what I need to do and then cross it off when it’s done. I have tons of prints with my artwork all over them as I try to keep track of racks and home runs and general progress.

I’m sure there is a more efficient, easier way to plan things out and keep track of them. Is there some software that I should be using?

I’ve been running work for about 8 years. My old school notebook method works fine on smaller jobs, but it doesn’t cut it on the bigger, more complex projects.

Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!

I’m trying to bid a government job, and the terms in their RFP is that the job must be done within 30 days of the bid being awarded.

Problem is, the part is special order only. After dozens of calls I haven’t found it squirreled away in any warehouses and the manufacturer is providing a 12 week+ lead time.

Even if I tried to build a work-around, the connections on this thing are very proprietary and are meant to mate with a specific connector they’re using.

What’s the best way to communicate the long lead time on the bid? Can I ask for payment up front? The parts are ~$50k and I’d have to finance that and eat interest for the 12-16 weeks while I wait to be able to do the installation.

Any and all advice appreciated.

Any electrical contractors out there ever built a ground up McDonald’s? I’ve been assigned one to bid and there’s a hell of a lot of electric in a tiny building. How many man hours did you burn? How much did you have in it? I’m almost embarassed to send my number to my boss because it surely can’t be right. It can’t cost that much to build this small of a place Also they’re demanding a 120 calendar day timeline for a ground up so my mind instantly sees 50 guys from all different trades standing nuts to butts like a bunch of fish in a net. It will be the worst porn ever made. If it’s an inappropriate question let me know, not trying to steal anyone’s work, just genuinely concerned that I’ve suddenly forgotten how to estimate after a decade of doing just that. Thanks in advance

It’s started to get really cold where I am in Canada, -13°C this morning, it gets so cold i’m unable to work sometimes. Can anyone recommend me some clothing they have or some other things that could help me be able to work? Thanks
