Original Title: We had to replace 2 transfer switches and swap the guts out of another one at work. I brought the old cabinets home and turned them into tool boxes. I’m considering installing a doorbell transformer to power up the lights on the faces.

I've been in the trade for over 10 yrs and a foreman for 3+ yrs and have lot of experience in everything except in Industrial/Controls, I feel so out of my element, feel like a 1st yr apprentice again with all the dumb mistakes I'm making and of course my foreman thinks I'm an idiot. The biggest issue I'm having are the crazy hours, never done the traveling gig before but despite the money being good I'm miserable and will probably just join the IBEW since my hall organizer said that I can test in since I have my license.

I don't get it, I've never talked to any of my apprentices like they were morons because they made stupid mistakes, I made a lot of dumb mistakes as a 1st year until I no longer made any mistakes, it just sucks that I haven't vibed with this guy and the worst part I'm stuck with him for another week since I'm far away from home lol.

I'm feeling like a failure though since this is prob the best opportunity I've had, I just can't physically and mentally do the two week 10 hr thing, I can do 48 hrs but I'm not cut out for working all this overtime and feel that I'd rather be homeless than working myself to death because the foreman wants to suck up to the boss.

What do you reccomend for staying warm during the winter or on really cold camps? Gloves, jackets, socks? What do you do to get by when working in the cold?

Like, after Society collapses and we don't have access to meters or anything that requires batteries but still have to troubleshoot electrical problems back at the vault/compound/thunderdome, how would we make sure the power is off before messing with stuff? Especially for high voltage circuits that you can't use your fingers for?

Trying to install a new leviton switch in an old house with shallow device boxes everywhere. Old switch was slightly deeper but since the new switch has leads I now need to add 3 marettes so the new switch doesn't fit. Is there a reason manufacturers do this? It's infuriating. I know the leads off the switch don't count for box fill since they don't leave the box and technically 3 marettes only count as 1 extra conductor so by code I am within box fill....but the switch physically will not fit in the box lol.

I've been an electrician for 8-9 years. Ive worked a good split between residential / commercial and most recently have stepped into a industrial setting. Im a hard worker and a reliable / honest person. I pride myself on being a hard worker, but sometimes being a hard worker just isn't enough. I don't actually understand how electrical works, I can't seem to remember stuff that I've done 100 times, especially if I'm not currently doing it, I'll forget it. I can wire a house but basically on just memory, I don't really understand it. If something is wired differently than what I'm used to, it would certuanly confuse me and It's just frustrating, Because I've been doing this for so long and it still hasn't clicked with me. I don't feel like I'm ready to be a journeyman and I've had enough hours to be one for a few years now. I can never remember which circuits need arc fault protection ( for residential in Canada ) , or certain wire sizes needed. I can't really read blueprints / schematics. Half the time when people ask me questions I'm like ahhhh, I'm not sure.. it's been awhile since I did that. I have no idea what I meant by wiring something in parallel vs series. I also have a hard time remembering codes and often need to reach out to a friend, even though I may have done that exact thing 300 times. Man I just feel so stupid. Especially when my peers are around and are always talking about electrical and the ins and outs of it all, almost always it goes over my head. Some of them have only been doing electrical for 2-3 years and seem like they have a better understanding of it all works. What can I do to better understand circuitry, Or am I just too stupid lol?

Just a thought, but I know all apprentices do atleast one thing that’s way over their pay grade at one point.

I’ve been handed full responsibility of lighting and low voltage controls for a commercial building, as a second year. (I’m happy about it fr)

What do you guys think?

I'm currently doing a prep course for a Master Electrician. I was wondering if anyone knows of any practice exams online. Alberta, Canada.

Original Title: Anyone else throw up when you see these? Yeah I know it’s code but quality has really gone down. I get it though, all in the interest of money. But then that begs the question why they use a 2-1/8 box?

Any chance there’s someone with experience on here I can DM to pick your mind on wiring off of a ansul system micro switch? I have 3 3-phase exhaust fans and 2 outlets I need to add to it. I’d ask the general community, but don’t feel like dealing with the “hire and electrician”, and other toxic comments on here. Yes I’m an electrcian, my experience doesn’t include this. I’ve worked as an electrcian for the railroad for 17 years, and finally branching off to learn other aspects of the trade.

I work in a rather noisy plant and sometimes it's difficult to check fuses on my fluke T5-1000. Anyone know of a reliable, inexpensive multimeter that either has a loud beep or has an indicator light for continuity?
