I'm going to be traveling with my Seagate Expansion Desktop for about 30 minutes total in -15 degrees celsius, 10 minutes outside and 20 in a bus. Do I need to wrap it in a towel or something so its less cold?

I heard someone mention condensation, but idk if this is a concern. BIt

Bought a 12TB Seagate enterprise drive off of GoHardDrive from Newegg. I think it has a 90-day warranty. Will be using this as a NVR drive. Should I be worried about the SMART result below? All the values seem to be the worst and past threshold unless I'm reading results wrong.

I don't like the extra space used by the exFat that came installed on a USB drive, e.g. 213K photo files are 178G on ext4 and 228G on exFat. I'm archiving ~1M jpgs sized 200K on average.

It looks like size, i/o and recoverability may be better with ext4. Assuming 2 copies and no interest in OSX/Windows compatibility (except for possible recovery tools), what filesystems would you use for the two copies? Including ntfs.

So MUBI isn't as common as Netflix or HBO Max obviously, so it i hard for me to find something that can download content from the website. I looked at programs like StreamFab (sooooo expensive) but they didn't list MUBI as one of the supported streaming companies.

Normally I am against monthly subscriptions- but since there are only a handful of shows and a few movies I want from them, I can just buy a month subscription and download them all before the 30 days is up, if that is all that is available I am fine with that.

And if said software allows for subtitles that would be great too since most content would be in Spanish or German or Danish.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Looking to organize and consolidate about 9 TB of photos and video, and I guess it is time to get serious about a NAS. Have a patchwork of drives and several Macs holding it all. What would you recommend for someone who doesn't even know enough to be in this sub and won't be building my own system?

Needs to work for Mac and needs to be suitable for a NAS dummy. Thank you.

It seems a big shame to throw them away. But one of the benefits of scanning them was to reduce the amount of space these old albums take up.

Wondering what other people's experience has been with this type of situation.

I need HDD for backup, files will be copied on average every 3-5 days. Nothing professional, should I just go for WD Blue? Internal drives are cheaper, and apparently external drives might be problematic if you need to perform data recovery, so might as well go with internal since I have docking station.

Seagate is apparently horribly bad and dies very often, and Toshiba drives are loud (which I can confirm myself).

I have 2 USB hard drives with 2tb each. The WD one came with a copy of Acronis "For Western Digital". When I plug in the other one from Toshiba, it's not detected by this version of Acronis. I formatted the Toshiba drive to exFat, and have a backup of my Android on it so I don't want to clone or reformat or anything that would overwrite it.

What's going on here? Does Acronis for WD not support other hard drives, or is the format the problem? What can I do to get an image of my (windows) laptop on an exFat hard drive without wiping it? If it's impossible to integrate the Toshiba drive into my Acronis use in any way what are some free alternatives you'd recommend that support exfat?

I need help with scraping an old Flash 5 site about 9/11 and then having it converted so that it can be viewable, most likely in video form. I'm on a Mac, and not a coder/programmer.

Here's the link:

I got my old usb hdd enclosure of Seagate 1000GB Free AgentDesk. I would like to use it as a place to archive files that take space on my home server. Is there some LBA limit (in hardware, etc) if I put f.ex 12TB hdd inside as GPT partition? I just want to be sure that files will not be lost if one day I will connect it and it will show me only 2TB or RAW partition instead of all my files. Mainboard inside is signed as "Cedar 3,5 usb rev1.4" and I can not get info about the limit.

Hey, I‘m about to move and I started to think about my backup system again. As the title says, it is amateur. All I read in here seems kind of overkill for my needs. Also, a big home based NAS type wouldn‘t be that convinient for me as I move a lot and travel 300+ days a year. Also- this is all private stuff. I care about my live photos and documents. I have one private MacBook, one private iPhone and a business phone that is only relevant for the private pictures I take with it.

How I do it:

Everything from the 2 phones go to the Mac as the original data. Then I have a SSD at home using Time Machine. Another SSD is in my dad‘s house, updating twice a year.

Cloud: For documents-OneDrive. For my photos I use the free Amazon photos app (free for prime users).

What do you guys think ?

I am running badblocks on 2 18TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives on Windows through WSL2. For both drives, I started running badblocks on them at the same time, and there was virtually no difference between them in terms of percentage completed.

I am now halfway through the 2nd pass the the percentage difference is close to 20 (one is at 70% finished, the other is 50%). The percentage difference seems to be increasing over time.

So far, no errors have been found on either drive by badblocks, but is there reason to be concerned?

Is the WD Elements Desktop a reliable external hard drive to use as my main storage device?

I'm aware that it won't be as fast as an SSD, but I need a large amount of storage space for my work and an SSD would be too expensive.

I don't want to compromise too much on speed, so I'm wondering if the WD Elements Desktop would be a good option for me.

And what is the speed of it? Is it close to 5 GB?

So…ordered 2x 16tb drives imported from serverpartdeals to the UK. In my stupidity I have ordered SAS drives without realising.

I run Unraid and have a SAS HBA card with the 1-4 SATA cables. Reading up on SAS drives, even with a little plastic adaptor, they wont show up on a SATA controller but these would be running through an SAS HBA.

Can I have it work with PCIE port -> SAS HBA -> 1-4 SAS to SATA cable -> Amazon SATA to SAS adaptor -> SAS drive? Obviously while some other slots of the cable connect to SATA drives.

Feel like an idiot for ordering in haste but hoping I haven’t wasted a bunch of money.

Thanks in advance.

My server is running out of storage and I need an external disk were to store files that I read maybe once a week.

I'd like to keep it off when I'm not using it but also being able to access to it without needs to go in the garage and turn the disk on again.

Should I look into some smart plug? or do you have another solution?

I Personally only have 1x 4TB portable HDD that holds pretty much all my data (Files, Pics, PC/Phone backups) etc.

I am aware of the general 3-2-1 backup strategy. But I dont realistically have a 3rd off-site backup place where I can store my HDD. We dont have another family member in the country we are living in so we dont really have another reliable place to just leave a HDD in.

My financial situation is unfortunately not at a place where I could spend monthly on cloud subscription solutions indefinitely and admittedly I am ignorant of cloud solutions but im not very trustful of security on cloud storages. Any tips on this regard would be greatly appreciated. Is there a consensus on the best cloud service for security and reliability?

My 4TB portable HDD is nearing full. Would it be best for me to just get another 4TB HDD since I very rarely have to go back and retireve data from the drive so it doesnt need to always be online like a NAS/DAS from my understanding these are typically for people that have home media servers and they need to constantly be accessing their data?

Transfer speeds are not really much of a concern since when I do large backups I just leave the PC on overnight anyways

I'm having trouble downloading (for example - there are other similar files that are quite big) from Web Archive. I've asked around and advice is to try using a download manager but that hasn't worked - it times out regardless. Is there a trick to getting big files from Web Archive? I know that downloads from archive.org/details/ can be resumed but it seems like stuff at web.archive.org/web/ can't be resumed?

Apologies for such a general question, but a very old system I never backed up just died and I am finally building a modern one. The system included a hardware RAID0 array of 2 SATA disks. The system ran on an nVidia nForce board from eons ago. If I expect any success with just reconnecting the drives and enabling RAID in any way on a modern MSi mobo (Z490) I’m smoking dope right? I already assumed I’d need RAID Reconstructor ($100) but I wanted to be sure I had no other options.
