I’m curious what led you to such differing opinions about the 11 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max?

I ask this as a 11 Pro user who has not felt a need to upgrade, and of course there’s always an itch to upgrade, but my 11 Pro still works as good as new, other than the usual degradation of better health.

The reality is that you’re going to see more places investing in these capabilities now, precisely because the chip shortage has shown how critical these capabilities are.

The ability to manufacture these is no longer simply an economic consideration. For countries that can afford it, it is a security consideration as well, and that changes the calculus of how much they’re willing to invest in their own industries and infrastructure.

On the other hand, thinking that putting in a bit of money in is going to make a difference is wishful thinking. The US put tens of billions into the CHIPS act, but this is a one-time off thing. Taiwan and TSMC invests tens of billions every year to keep its edge, and has been doing so for decades.

On the other hand, why would ARM want to kill the golden goose? Apple really brought ARM into the mainstream in a big way, and showed that its capabilities weren’t limited to low powered mobile devices.

IMHO smartphones already reached where they needed to be 5 years ago. Everything now is entirely iterative, and you’re probably not going to see a paradigm shift in smartphones. The real paradigm shift will come from wearables, which is where we see Apple focusing its efforts on now (wearables including smartwatches and AR/VR).

On a similar note, does anyone know any websites/subs with a collection of good deals on all PC parts? Some of us need more than just storage…

Hi guys, I’m looking to set up a couple of tower servers for both storage and compute, and am looking at a setup that looks something like this:

Epyc 7713 (potentially single or dual processor) + motherboard, should be EATX

12-16 3.5”HDD

HBA card

Potentially 1x 4090

I would like to know if there are any recommendations with such a setup or potential issues in a tower case, and good tower cases that could fit?

I currently have a Fractal Define 7 XL with a Ryzen 5950X, 3090 and 12 3.5” HDD in there, so I’m fairly confident that the setup above should be able to fit as well, but I would like to know if there are better recommendations out there, as well as a potential for fitting more than 12 drives in a case.

My main limitation right now is that the setup should be air cooled and not too noisy, hence I’m probably not looking at a rack setup right now.

Who needs E cores when you can pull the same benchmarks as Intel at 2/3s the power?

And then now they’ll claim “and we kept the same socket for the 13th and 14th gen” when it’s really the same generation.

Just curious - how do they help with hearing loss? Do they help you isolate voices better against background noise?

Did they really just say up to 11 hours additional battery life, and just breeze past it in 5 seconds like it was nothing?

I’m curious what this was in comparison to, and what accounts for this improvement in battery life.

That alone seems pretty nuts, even without taking anything else into account.

I’m curious why they would only include AV1 decode and not encode. Considering that creatives are supposed to be a significant part of their target audience, I would’ve assumed that AV1 hardware encode would’ve been pretty valuable.
