get a 2nd desktop for said purpose, have it run Linux or a nas os. it doesn't have to be new and anything from the last 15 years will work

that part isn't a problem with Irish isps, I run a variety of things to myself without problems

normally you'd rent out a server (vps) and run it on there but hosting from your house would also work. the whole idea about Lemmy is that each instance is ran on different servers by different people

use smb ftp sftp or something similar, just make sure both laptops are connected to the router with ethernet. if the old laptop has its storage easily accessible then I might also just take it out and plug it into my sata dock
