I use Xfce for my media laptop and was wondering why anyone would use virtual desktops when the buttons on the top panel are so tiny and annoying to click

Then I recently found out you can move your cursor all the way to the left or right edge and scroll with your mouse wheel to switch virtual desktops.

Made me consider actually using virtual desktops lol

Yeah, but my point was that people generally spend money on things that make them happy. That could also be treating a friend to lunch, but that's not usually $20k.

So I guess what I was trying to say was, why is it suddenly a problem to spend $20k, when it's a pet and not something else, that clearly does not create any financial gain but only gives joy to the person spending the cash?

That's kinda the exact opposite. Not many people want to use small instances, so not many people are interested in fixing something like that. However, let's say lemmy.world becomes unusable because of too much cross-server communication. That would cause inconvenience to way more people, increasing the likelihood that someone will do the work to fix it.

What was it like? :D

Recently learned a new, simple cocktail.

  • 330ml rhubarb lemonade
  • 40ml Licor 43
  • 10-20ml lime juice
  • 3-4 ice cubes

Absolute perfection IMHO

I don't think brains get more complex because of additional information.

Also, what I'm not sure you mean with having "enough capacity to reflect ourselves by processing everything"? Do you mean analyzing another brain or analyzing your own brain? Do you mean processing every time a neuron fires, and which neurons get what kind of stimulus from it? Or do you mean looking at all molecules/atoms/fundamental particles and considering their state and following reaction?

I think we should be capable of understanding the concepts that make our brains work eventually. But I don't think we have the capacity to monitor everything another brain is doing and understand/interpret it in real time, let alone our own brain. A computer might be able to at some point, when we understand more about neurology.

I'm sure if we reach that point, someone will add a method for batching cross-server communication. That's the beauty of FOSS

Yeah tea with honey is the first thing I make when I wake up with a stomach ache.

Maybe removing the tea bag is essential? Idk haha

I think most normal, reaaonable humans agree that both coffee and tea are good, and that both cats and dogs are cute. People just have a preference and like to joke around about that.

I have to concede though, that are some legitimately crazy people who go 100% team XYZ and leave no space at all for the positive sides of the other team.

That's pretty creepy. I had computer voices asking me whether I agree to being recorded for training purposes when calling customer support and the likes. But never during a private call.

Maybe contact/write to your provider or something?

In places where glass is reused, it's definitely the best option. It's heavier so it has a higher co2 output during transport but glass bottles can be reused up to 50 times, saving co2 in the long run.

But I have to concede, in america aluminum is probably the best option.

I recently switched to Linux. First I tried Pop_OS, and am now on Nobara. On both systems I have this issue, that when I open a YouTube video in a new tab, and immediately start fullscreen, it doesn't properly do it.

As you probably know, YouTube videos start playing before the whole page has finished loading. There are some placeholders for the title and description etc, but the actual text is still loading despite the video already playing. If I enter fullscreen during this moment, the browser enters full screen mode, but not the video/website.

What I remember happening on windows is that when the page finished loading, the video would enter proper fullscreen mode. Now, on Linux, that doesn't seem to work and the website just gets displayed regularly with the browser now in fullscreen mode.

Any ideas on what could cause this or how to troubleshoot this?

... it looks like ended up breaking my PC on the move somehow... I even went ahead and removed the GPU to prevent it from breaking but it looks like that's actually what ended up being broken 🙃 (I have 4 debug LEDs. When I turn it on it goes from CPU to DRAM to VGA and gets stuck there). I'll have to see if I can get it to work somehow after I get home later, but I'm afraid I was unlucky enough to actually have killed my GPU with static electricity. And of course it had to be the most expensive part....

I am currently in the process of moving (actual date of move is Sunday) and I have almost everything packed up in boxes. It was a bunch of work and I can't really think of anything else to be proud of right now.
