Is there a book you've read you wish you could go back and give to your younger self and say, "read this!" or a book you read and you're mad you've gone through however long being oblivious to how good it is?

Out of all the books you've read in 2023, which are your favorites so far?

Joke's on them. I set one of my communities to NSFW and then unmodded myself.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I haven't read that particular book, but I love Frannie Flagg.

Or a few of the funniest if you just can't choose.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it took me awhile to train my brain to focus on them. I have to do something that requires almost no thought to basically keep my hands busy without distracting me from focusing on the book.

If you have a library card you can probably use hoopla and/or libby.

Yes! That's awesome. Come join us in [email protected] to discuss books!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, and I moderate a few communities. If an instance disappears so do my communities.

I'm 1000% pro-audiobooks. I listen to them when I wash dishes, drive, or play certain video games.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think that's an excellent tip. That's how I got back into reading. Instead of trying to set aside an hour or two for reading I just started carrying a book around so I could read 10 pages here or there when I would have otherwise been looking at my phone or staring into space. It's a really easy way to read more without taking time away from other things. I get reading in when I'm standing in line or in a waiting room or waiting to meet up with a friend.

My number one tip is don't be afraid to DNF. (DNF stands for Did Not Finish.) I used to be someone who wanted to finish every book I started and I always held out hope a book would get better, but I read so much more if I just give up on books I'm not enjoying. Now that I DNF things more quickly it keeps me from getting into reading slumps.

Thank you so much!

If anyone is interested in seeing what graphic novels we've read so far we keep a current list on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/group/bookshelf/1182963-lighthouse-library-graphic-novel-book-club

With graphic novels in particular we read two every month.

And we use discussion thread channels for our book clubs so it's possible for people to join in on the conversation even if they join after we've already finished something.

My favorite books are probably Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition: The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-Bound Cat by Caroline Alexander, The Plutonium Files: America's Secret Medical Experiments in the Cold War by Eileen Welsome, Stoner by John Williams, and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Hitchhiker's Guide, of course.
