Mountain biker here, a primarily bike path would have a deeper rut in it cause of the way tyres sink into the earth. Also, no tyres tracks visible. Probably would have some bikers, but not its main purpose, I'd guess.

In a complete change of direction, might it be possible to model the joints as a "bendy straw" joint and avoid this whole question of bearings?

It's also a good way to potentially multiply your query costs and slow down the function, while introducing possible inconsistencies if the objects are modified between the first and last time they are requested.
