A 3D Printer, I think I'd enjoy making small "functional" things.

if you like the gradual improvement over time aspect of the story, you'd love the Progression Fantasy genre.

Here's a site that has a catalogue of most novels in that genre

Not so Fun Fact: Ken Akamatsu abruptly ended Negima because of disputes with Kodansha and some proposed Japanese Copywrite Law.

I think it would've been better if Negima was continued rather than creating UQ Holder. It would've been a more epic series that'd be similar to the old Big 3.

3rd party Android apps like

Infinity (no shortcut though, needs 2 clicks, 3 Dot settings > Hide Read Posts, I also am not sure if it has Mark Posts as read upon scroll).

Voyager, and Sync has these.

Connect has Mark Posts as Read upon Scroll, but doesn't have Hide Read Posts button.

No Spoilers Please! Does UQ Holder Tie Up the Many Loose Ends of Negima?

I just finished re-reading Negima and have realized again how much questions are left unanswered.

I was wondering if UQ Holder would be worth the read.

What Life Changing Item Can You Buy for Less Than 1000php? 5000php? 10,000php?

I'll start

  1. 2nd Monitor (WFH setup), I bought mine used in Gilmore at around 2k php. Mas-productive iyong setup kasi pwedeng may meeting sa isang monitor tapos work sa isa pa, and etc.

  2. Range Hood, bought at SM Appliance Store for total 7k php (with installation).

Any Eleceed Readers Here? Chapter 261 Discussion

I guess Kayden being badass moments is coming to a close for now, coming to a "draw" to the world's top 10 even while not using his own techniques.

Andrei running off was the best idea he'd ever had.

Kayden x Curtis moment is funny af.

Do We Have a Way to Give Suggestions for Arena Mode?

Coming from TFT, the augment system in Arena is pretty bad.

  1. Augments you looked past comes back when you rer-roll or during other augment rounds. I don't want to see Phenomenal Evil three times in one game.

  2. Some augments shouldn't show up at the later augment rounds like the "You can buy any number of mythic items". Imagine you're full build, 700gold and you got that augment. You can't sell 5 legendary items and get 5 mythic, you'll probably only get 4 mythics and be down an item.

  3. I wish they'd implement the better re-roll system as well, where you can re-roll individual augments instead.

Can Anyone Recommend me Magic/Superhero School or Guild Stories?

Here's what I've read so far.

  1. Worm by Wildbow (Superhero "guild")

  2. Mage Errant (Magic School)

  3. Harry Potter Series (Magic School)

  4. Vita Nostra (Magic School)

  5. Super Powereds (Superhero School)

  6. The Circle Series by Sara Elfgren (Magic within normal School)

I've also read The Magician but I didn't liked it.

I may have forgotten some other books but hopefully this narrows it down.

Can Someone Explain Gemini (2017) to Me?

Spoilers ahead

I just finished watching it and was confused. Either the mystery part was lacking or I'm missing something.

  1. What were the coins about? Was it just a red herring?

  2. Was it really just self-defense? or was it premeditated or something?

  3. Why did the detective insisted on watching the interview even though the case was officially closed?

I still enjoyed the film, it was visually pleasing, it had a unique vibe to it. I especially love the city light scenes in Travy's house.

I was all caught up with the mystery up until the "twist" where it was actually the fan who died. I was waiting for something more cathartic, but apparently that was it. It just left me wanting for more.

7/10 maybe 7.5 if someone explain the ending to me better.

Just Finished Watching Death to Smoochy (2002)

I didn't know what to expect coming in to this film. All I knew that it had Robin Williams, and I found the film from a clip of him dancing through the streets and faceplanting to the wall (btw just watch the whole thing, it's a great love letter to the late Robin Williams).

I was disappointed that the MC wasn't Robin but was Ed Norton who plays Smoochy. Only for a bit though because Ed killed it and greatly portrayed this bundle of ethics character that had an anger management problem deep deep deep down.

The plot was wack but the characters and their interactions with one another were the highlight of the film.

Robin Williams still played a significant part in the movie, but I wished he was used better. He was eclectic as Rainbow Randolph, never really felt scary as a villain but maybe that was the point.

Anyways it was an enjoyable experience, 7/10.

  1. Hearing “Takeshi Obata”, what are your impressions even if you haven’t read any of his works?
  2. If you’ve read any of his works, do you think his old works are better than his new ones?
  3. What's your take on art only mangaka? Can they stand up on their own or are they carried by the story written by another mangaka?
  4. Which Story Mangaka do you think would pair well with Takeshi Obata?

Introduction

Takeshi Obata is a Japanese manga artist that usually works as the illustrator in collaboration with a writer. He first gained international attention for Hikaru no Go with Yumi Hotta, but is better known for drawing Death Note and Bakuman.

Obata has mentored several well-known manga artists, including Nobuhiro Watsuki of Rurouni Kenshin, Black Cat creator Kentaro Yabuki, and Eyeshield 21 artist Yusuke Murata.

Wikipedia article - Mangaupdates page - MyAnimeList page

Short Bio

He was first noticed in 1985 when he took a prize in the Tezuka Award for his one shot 500 Kōnen no Shinwa.

Joining the Weekly Shōnen Jump staff in 1989, he mentored under Makoto Niwano before starting his first major series, writing and drawing Cyborg Jii-chan G.

He then created Hikaru no Go with Yumi Hotta, which received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1999 and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2003.

In 2003 he teamed up with Tsugumi Ohba to create Death Note. It became his biggest hit to date, with 26.5 million copies in circulation, an anime adaptation and three live action films.

He then reunited with Tsugumi Ohba for Bakuman., which ran from August 2008 to April 2012.

In 2014, he drew a manga adaptation of All You Need Is Kill with Ryōsuke Takeuchi.

Author's Works

Obata's most notable works (which is also the focus of our discussion) are:

Hikaru no Go (1998)

A regular school boy, Hikaru Shindo stumbles upon an old GO board while looking through his grandpa's old storage room for something worth money. From inside the board came an old spirit named Sai who once dedicated his life to GO.

Death Note (2004)

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects, and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook will die according to it's writer's will.

Bakuman (2008)

Mashiro, with his superb drawing skill, is invited by his writing genius classmate Takagi to tread the difficult path of the mangaka. His sights are set on his naive yet earnest joint dream with Miho, who is aiming to become a voice actress.

All You Need Is Kill (2014)

The world is in a war against an alien race called "Mimics," who have a mission to eliminate the human race. Keiji Kiriya is a new recruit, which is battling against these "Mimics". In his first day of deployment, Keiji encounter "Mimics" and killed, but for some inexplicable reason, after every time he dies, he is resurrected and returned back to the day before the battle.

Platina End (2015)

After the death of his parents, a young Mirai Kakehashi is left in the care of his abusive relatives. Since then, he has become gloomy and depressed, leading him to attempt suicide on the evening of his middle school graduation. Mirai, however, is saved by a pure white girl named Nasse who introduces herself as a guardian angel wishing to give him happiness by granting him supernatural powers and a chance to become the new God. In order to earn the position, he must defeat 12 other "God Candidates" within 999 days. Soon, Mirai begins a struggle to survive as a terrifying battle royale erupts between himself and the candidates looking to obtain the most power in the world.

In addition to his numerous manga work, he also done character design work for the video game Castlevania Judgment, as well as illustrating several light novels.

Fun Fact

Obata is rare among shōnen artists, not only for the detail of his drawings, but in his penchant for fashion; the characters he draws often wear stylish clothes and trendy items like the latest fashionable scarf, tie, or handbag.

On September 6, 2006, Obata was arrested for illegal possession of an 8.6 cm knife when he was pulled over in Musashino, Tokyo for driving with his car's headlights off at 12:30am. The artist claimed he keeps the knife in his car for when he goes camping.

Hello, I'll try to make at least one mangaka discussion post per week. Let me know in the comments which one you want to see next time.

Any suggestions to make these better are welcome.

Which Lemmy App is Stable Like Jerboa but has "Hide Read Post" Feature? (and no not the lemmy built-in setting to hide read posts).

I've tried Infinity and Sync but they're unstable (closes out when posting comments, posts, viewing context, etc.) which rarely happens in Jerboa.
