It never occurred to me that I should use a combination of my remaining balance + another payment method to zero out my app balance. I always felt I needed to top off before I purchased, especially because I would go with my coworkers during the day.

Yes please (prefer #1, #2 a non starter imo). Community fragmentation drives me nuts and there is a ton of it across the lemmyverse. At the very least, each instance could dedupe their communities.
Ideally communities are deduped across the fediverse too. But even on that one non federated centralized forum, people would create communities that caused fragmentation, even if the population was super low to begin with (people love to have fiefdoms). It is hard problem to solve deduplicated communities across federated communities I’ll admit.
