LM Studio is one of the most user friendly ways to play around with LLMs imo. You can run some of the smaller models without too much memory (it will be slow without a decent GPU though).
Been a while since I played it but I don't remember it being particularly tied to the original in terms of story
In Windows 11 if you have internet access during the initial setup it won't even let you make a local account anymore like it did on Windows 10.
