Is anyone serious about abolishing the institutions of the US right now? Or rather, anyone notable; there's obviously always been fringe revolutionaries in any era.

[–] ashenblood 2 points 1 year ago

The obvious discrepancy is that Germany in 1928 was a shattered, impoverished economy. The US remains the wealthiest, most economically productive nation in the world by a wide margin. In order for revolution to take root, there typically needs to be a major decline in the quality of life of the average citizen. The US has been able to economically exploit other nations in order to maintain the bread and circuses that keep the population complacent.

Furthermore, the centrality of democracy to the American cultural identity is unparalleled. America is just very unique when compared to most other nation states, and that's hard for people outside of America to wrap their heads around at times.

I mean it IS incredibly robust. It's never really been a democratic system, but it's just as stable as ever. Anyone who believes that the Jan 6 nonsense was actually an attempted coup, as opposed to calculated political theater, is quite naive. The system is highly dysfunctional, but it's also self-sustaining. As long as the money keeps circulating through the corporations, politicians, media, lobbyists, lawyers, bankers, etc, it remains rock solid. Everyone who has the power to strike a blow to the system is already on the payroll.

I'll never return, regardless of what Reddit does, but I don't blame you for your position.

I'd just say don't give up yet, I think we have a pretty large chunk of people sitting on the sidelines temporarily, waiting to see if Lemmy actually becomes what it aspires to be.

Also I don't mean to be rude, but it would be nice if Tildes users just came to Lemmy and helped us build here. I'm sure many Tildes users use Lemmy anyways. Tildes is just way too small (like 10% the size of Lemmy) and even if it did take off, it would probably turn out the same way as reddit. But that's just like, my opinion, man.

Totally agree. It happened due to capitalism, and there doesn't seem to be any easy way to reverse it.

There are few things in this world that annoy me more than people who use the workplace for social gratification because they are insufferable in their private lives and nobody wants to spend time with them in the absence of a financial incentive.

The sensitivity of the R-word is just one of those idiosyncratic, virtue signaling cultural things that has become trendy in America in the past decade. Your rational reaction is fair, but it's a moot point. The reality is, using that word prevents rational discussion, because a large enough portion of people are opposed to its use that it ends up derailing the conversation.

My recommendation is to just use moron, imbecile, idiot, stupid, braindead, troglodyte, dumbass, halfwit, simpleton, dullard, nincompoop, etc. There is no shortage of alternatives.

FYI mongoloid is also not acceptable anymore. Calling something retarded is probably marginally less offensive, but still not advisable.

I don't think the rules about what is offensive make any logical sense, but using the R-word is not going to be the hill that I choose to die on.

Yes, as we know, the notability of national accomplishments diminishes as a function of time... other nations would never consider being proud of anything their ancestors accomplished before they were born. Lmao

If you don't have enough things to be proud of as an American, which nationality would be good enough to meet your standards?

I don't think him saying dumb stuff on his podcast is good evidence of a lack of intelligence. The podcast is an entertainment product, not an IQ test. Also, the likelihood of anyone saying something blatantly wrong/stupid is nearly 100% if you record them long enough and make them talk about a wide enough variety of topics.

I don't even wanna be defending Joe Rogan but it's just obvious that he's not below average intelligence, and pushing that propaganda contributes to the pervasive failure of the left to understand the grievances of the right. It's not as simple as all conservatives being idiots.

While I understand and respect the dunking in light of his detrimental effect on politics and sanity in general, I feel it's disingenuous to imply he's stupid. He's just smart enough to be dangerous
