That's a good point, and Harry's exposure to Ron's family is a huge reason why Harry retained a semblance of morality despite his heroic status.

what sort of wizarding Street smarts are you talking about?

[–] Varyk 20 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I might need a refresher, I remember Hermione and Harry being powerful in the books, with Hermione. more powerful, but Ron not so much equal on their level.

what did he get good at?

[–] Varyk 24 points 1 week ago

fuck yeah, these guys are killing it.

coupled with all the judges and lawyers, all the executive orders they're managing to stop is pretty great.

will of the people with legitimate political act action.

it is still very easy to get a passport. I helped a friend get theirs last month, and more over the years.

don't listen to any of the ignorant comments saying it's difficult to get one; they don't know what they're talking about.

you can do it online or in person at a US Post office.

fill out the application form, takes maybe 20 minutes tops, pay the fee (165$), they take your picture, you will get your passport in the mail in a couple of weeks, it lasts for 10 years, renewable on the go from embassies and consulates.

If you have any questions about passports or traveling, fire away.

"Harris is better than Trump."

...it's demeaning to Harris to say she's better than a rapist. most violent drug addicts are better than a rapist.

"But they will never give you freedom, they don't want to."

I mean, ridiculous.

I know, it's a cool meme right now, but totally ridiculous.

"You need something more radical"

no one brought up Harris until you did .

I'm backing AOC and Bernie; if you don't recognize their radical political nature, you do not understand the first word of what you're talking about.

which, I suppose, evident here:

"Then, and ONLY then, will things change."

things are changing right now, it sucks. you don't need things to change,, you need things to get better. stop looking for radical Solutions when AOC and Bernie are telling you the very normal everyday solutions that take a lot of work to get done.

those solutions work, those Solutions are better education funding, universal healthcare, money out of politics.

it's not fun or a good meme, but those are the real answers and you have two people who are telling you what to do and how to do it if you really care about making things better.

I'll tell you, I backpack between cities regular, and a lot of those agricultural towns don't even have police stations.

[–] Varyk 41 points 1 week ago (15 children)

every time someone, including myself quotes the population of China, (officially 1.4 billion), I think about the huge towns in the middle of nowhere that I've been to and think "or maybe 2 billion"

"You need me to recap this exchange...?"

nope, I did that for you a couple comments above.

"as they saw China, the country, as in the regime, as dangerous"

you are making things up. That is not what @DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee said.

@DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee said:

"I hate the culture”, “I hate Chinese culturue”, “fuck China”, “I hate the whole thing”

The whole thing, sport. The people, the culture, the whole thing.

After I pointed out this was racist, DP was quick to change his tune, and say he hated everything about China, specifically the culture, except the people.

Hating culture or thinking one is superior to another is racism, especially when you know so little about the culture except the people who make it up.

Quick def for you: "Cultural racism is a concept that has been applied to prejudices and discrimination based on cultural differences between ethnic or racial groups. This includes the idea that some cultures are superior to others"

"Your concern was their apparent racism"

Yeah, I don't like racism so I call it out when it occurs. Usually it stems from ignorance, and they just have to be called out to be woken up.

"criticizing this position of your,"

not my position, you're making this up.

" personally find America snd China’s regimes parallels,"

absolutely absurd, as I explained above. but it's good you changed your tune to: "although ideologically opposite", which is still incorrect but more open-minded.

See, all I have to do is call you guys out and you start thinking more critically.

"without addressing a single point of it"

Which part do you want more help on? I have a lot of time and am free to continue correcting and educating you.

"without addressing a single point of it"

clearly not true, and you know it:

"except for..."

except for addressing every single point. With verifiable knowledge.

"I’ve already deemed this a closed argument"

Oh, clearly, it's so closed you needed to write paragraphs rewriting yours and others' comment history and reframing their racism.

"Be well, have a good one."

Thanks, I'm having a GREAT one!

inaccurate and very satisfying.

I have to get all your uninformed false starts out of the way somehow.

I want to hear your first hand experiences, and your reasonings behind liking or not liking the two sequels.

I'm asking this question because it's come up many times over the years, I've literally never met anybody else who like the second or third matrix movies, but don't think I've ever heard any argument against either movie that isn't "the dancing scene is dumb", "the architect is confusing" or " it's not as good as the first matrix".

And none of those are expanded upon, it's a short statement like that. And then you're supposed to understand that because of the dancing or because the architects monologue was confusing, the other four hours of film should be disregarded.

Based on one or more of those brief barbs, everyone I've ever talked to virulently hates and disregards the sequels.

I liked reloaded and revolutions when they came out in the theater and I still like all three movies today.

I liked the fourth one also, but I've only seen it once and that might be because my expectations were so low(no fishburne?). A second screening is in order.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

I'm curious if there is another person who actually likes the sequels or if you don't like the sequels, is there a reason outside of culturally unpopular 5 minute scenes ruining the entire rest of both movies for you?

I actually only recognize the howler, and I'm guessing that the hammerhead on skis is from the Arctic episode. But I think of that andalite bird when I see that weird green creature. I don't know what the purple one is supposed to be, do you guys know?

So the dog. Opening scene. If it's just looking to infect everyone it possibly can, it doesn't make a lot of sense for it to turn around and stare at the pursuing helicopter.

Are there prevailing fan theories about the reason that the dog, presumably the surviving thing, stopped and looked back at the pursuing helicopter?

Looks like everyone got banged up and is recuperating after a battle.

Is there a particular scene where Rachel gets a bloody nose as a human?

Sherman: Your methods pretty scientific lady

Anne: studied urine biology before I met Steve

The movie is way more fun than I was worried about, it was James Cameron's directorial debut.

It's very dumb, but the enjoyable kind.

Hit me right away, but face close-up in the comments

My views have radically changed since I first read the books about when they were coming out, and my rereads a decade or two later.

I'm pretty sure Marco used to be my favorite character because I was the class clown but was not the dullest light bulb, so I instantly identified with his humor, strategy and pragmatism.

There were definitely points in the series where I thought that I identified with other characters more, but I know that Marco was my constant since he was always cracking jokes to make sure the team wasn't overstressed while at the same time having the master plan in mind at all times.

Cassie used to be my least favorite, although I admired her skill in morphing. Her hesitation in making decisions that harmed the yeerks often bothered me and I could recognize the advantages of having Rachel on your team for power or ax for technology or Marco for strategy, but when I first read the books I didn't realize what Cassie brought to the team.

This was because as a child I had morals and assumed without evidence that everybody else did also, so I didn't realize how important Cassie's were.

Rereading the books as an adult, two of Cassie's books became some of my favorite adventures and the depth with which she is forced to examine her own beliefs and crucially change her beliefs to adapt to her new reality as a child soldier was pretty fascinating, since I didn't recall such a depth of emotion and moral ambiguity with her books previously.

Now I can recognize and appreciate how important it is to have someone who can question how just an action is regardless of the righteousness.

Without Cassie, the team would have been far more vicious and all either died very quickly or become genocidal maniacs.

I know, I am as disappointed as any of you that there is not a complete set of these amazing covers.

It seems like 1-13 were produced for the 2018 re-release of the novels.

If anyone knows Dang Thanh Tam or speaks Vietnamese, get in touch with the artist or find his presence online and ask him if he has any more covers filed away somewhere.

Oh, or if there are any Animorphs fans with an extra several grand lying around, commission him to finish these.

Everything takes place over a few hours, or entirely set during the immediate aftermath of an automobile crash, for example?

I'd like to avoid "and it was all a dream", time travel, or similar plot devices if possible.

I'm curious what a novel of any length purposely confined to a strict time window in-story reads like.

Maybe I should be reading more plays.

Thanks.

I'll always remember Ax and Cinnabons and cigarette butts, and then the

spoilerlater horror of that one Shakira getting his tail cut off.

Real opposite ends of the memory spectrum there.

It really bothered me when Ax listenibg to the andalites instead of Jake when I first read this book, I didn't understand how onerous or tangible culture was for another decade or so until I started traveling.

It's also pretty scary when

spoilerthey start disappearing out of nowhere and nobody even had a theory as to what has happened to the disappeared Animorphs for several chapters.

As much as time travel Deus ex machina stuff gets my eye rolls going, I very much enjoy a lot of the arcs here, especially ax's burgeoning identity crisis.
