Have you read The Expanse? How does it compare?

I think it's debated a lot but from what I remember it's because the sky is a big empty space, the Eagles are sentient and do what they want, the nazgul patrol the sky and dead kings sense the ring. Sauron has an eye that is ever watching. It would've been too dangerous and risky to lose the ring for the Eagles while the enemy still lived.

I use an android device and my NAS is a Synology ds923. Jellyfin wasn't nearly as smooth an experience for me as Plex was. I'm willing to switch to FOSS but it doesn't seem as good yet..

The dude abides 😎

My wife and I love white Russians. Lately we've been making our own coffee syrup, Havana 7 year rum and 10% cream. It's also very good.

I find the price has also doubled.

What exactly is he talking about? Which law prohibits the specific 'free speech' he is referring to?

You took it too far bro

Do you have an offsite backup? Or do you only backup specifics? Like 10-20% of that?

Which distro do you use?

Do you typically believe everything you read in meme form?

I've been to Paris 3 times, I'm from BC in Canada. April, May and October I went. Had an amazing time every time, people, food, places. It's one of my favorite cities.

I live in southern BC and heat with a newer Carrier heat pump. The outdoor unit is a 28 seer model paired with an indoor ducted unit. It works fairly well until a week or two when we have -25c and below which I switch to our baseboard. I'm a home builder and built the house and it's definitely better than a 1990 or older home but nowhere near the efficiency we are building today.

Our electric rates are $0.142/kWh. I don't know what gas is as I don't have the option.

I do agree that heat pumps struggle with colder temps and northern homes, especially older ones, aren't going to be able to heat consistently through the winter. Storms and outages also are an issue but gas won't heat a house if there's no power either.

It would be a nice feature to be able to select which installed browser jerboa defaults to opening external links in.

I have sonarr, radarr, gluetun and qbittorrent with overseer allowing my family to request movies and automatically download. I only have public indexers in prowlarr (1337x, kickass torrents, etc.)

This NAS also has a lot of important data like photos and documents.

I am used to vetting my torrents pretty thoroughly before downloading but now it's all automatic.

What level of risk am I running with my data when downloading things in this manner? Is there a chance of malware getting onto my NAS? Ransomware? Is the risk pretty minimal?

“Dry conditions are not new to the Special Areas, but ongoing moisture deficiencies and hot temperatures have devastated crops and pasture throughout the region. Producers are struggling to find enough grass, water, and feed for their cattle. Farmers are facing widespread crop failures. Significant grasshopper infestations are making a very difficult situation worse in many parts of the Special Areas. Declaring an agricultural disaster is one way we can raise awareness of how serious this problem is with the province and with the federal government.” Jordon Christianson, Chair

I currently use an old (2013?) Intel NUC with a 12TB MyBook plugged in as a simple Plex server. I want to get a NAS. Right now at Amazon or B&H I can get a DS923+ w/ two 16TB HDDS for about $1000.

My main question is if I should try to go the DIY route. Am I going to possibly regret putting all my eggs in the Synology basket? I like the DS923+ because of it's small form factor mainly. But I am sort of keen to use an open source OS like TrueNas.

My main uses are going to be Plex hosting, photo management for myself and wife and data backup. I am a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to electronics. I love messing around with things, trying new software, breaking stuff and fixing it. Are there any major restrictions I am going to experience with Synology? Thanks a bunch!

-edit- Thank you everyone for all the replies! Super helpful, Lemmy rocks :)

I currently use an Ubuntu distro (Mint) with Plex installed serving media to my local network. I installed docker last night so I can test out some photo hosting services.

Is there a benefit to running Plex through docker vs the traditional method?
