Article on Literacy Tests.

Presented as a means for assessing whether voters were educated enough to vote, literacy tests and other methods were designed for a single purpose: to stop Black Americans from voting.

During the Reconstruction period that followed the war, enfranchised Black men gave Ulysses S. Grant his narrow victory in the popular vote. Before that period ended, 2,000 Black Americans would be elected to office in the South.

But by the dawn of the 20th century, all the progress that was made to expand the rights of formerly enslaved Black Americans was severely crippled by the institution of state-specific voting laws that were designed to exclude Black voters from the ballot box. Southern states created elaborate voter registration procedures or “voting literacy tests” that determined whether the voter in question was literate enough to cast their ballot.

Of course, these voting literacy tests were administered largely to voters of color and were scored by biased judges. The tests were intentionally confusing and difficult and one wrong answer meant a failing grade. Even Black voters with college degrees were given failing scores.

In the mid-1960s, a professor of law at Duke University, William W. Van Alstyne, conducted an experiment in which he submitted four questions found on the Alabama voter’s literacy test to “all professors currently teaching constitutional law in American law schools.”

Alstyne’s professors were told to answer all submitted questions without the aid of any external reference, just as any voter would be required to do when presented with the test. Ninety-six respondents sent Alstyne their answers; 70 percent of the answers given to him were incorrect.

As Alstyne had demonstrated, passing a voting literacy test was virtually impossible. The questions were intentionally written to confuse the reader, and one wrong answer would result in automatic failure.

Why must you put the rest of the world through this bullshit again.

I feel for everyone who’s gonna be struggling - queer, poc, undocumented, women. I fear for the global south. I fear for the earth.

It seems like young men are being men. Dipshits. Also, looks like suburban white women hate minorities more than want abortion. Cool. Cool cool cool.

Not like kkkanada is much better. PP is probably gonna get a boost from this - hopefully our Libs and NDP see this as a warning sign and coalesce like the French did to keep the fascists out.

But maybe I’m just in denial. Everyone I talk to hates Trudeau and Singh - and while I hate them for good reasons (they’re both libs - one a neoliberal, the other a sucdem) others hate them for wrong reasons - Trudeau for so many, Singh cuz racism. Which is very worrying. And annoying.

Another coworker likes monarchies. A third thinks management cares about them. I’m. In. Hell.

BTW, I don’t even fucking talk to the whites about this shit so who knows how fucking nazi-like they are when we are not around.

Try and find one video of a child smiling in Gaza like you see in literally the first 30 seconds of this video.

Excellent, if depressing, discussion about the $10 billion project to destroy the Great Nicobar Island, threatening the nesting ground of the largest turtle in the world, cutting over a million trees, and relocating the indigenous population of the island, all to turn it into a shipping and tourism hub. Also goes into the regulatory capture and corruption that allowed this to happen over the past decade or so and the excuses of "national security/defence" etc. used by the govt.

I found another discussion with the author that I haven't watched yet and here's the book they mentioned, The Great Nicobar Betrayal. I'll definitely read it.

I know the leftist in me is supposed to have sympathy for these people and get them to unionize. But only after I stop laughing and enjoying this moment. For years these fucks told the rest of us to “learn to code” and pretended like studying anything else at uni was a fucking waste of time.

GUESS WHAT FUCKERS. SO WAS CODING. Looks like we’ll be baristas together, only I’ll have three years of experience!!!

we dunk on libs and cons so much we sometimes forget centrists are worse. they are so. much. worse.

Numbers outside of this range are extreme weather.

Hot Weather: This argument might have been valid like a century ago but it clearly hasn’t been valid for billions of people around the world (including parts of the US) that regularly sees temperature crossing 38 C (100 F) in the summer. This includes Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and I’m sure more places too.

Like, it’s not extreme if it’s expected every year. And I’m not taking 39 C. Where I lived, it reached 49 C (120 F) every single summer. That is summer.

Cold Weather: And this is also true for so many people around the world who live in places where temperature, every winter, goes below -18 C (0 F). Like, that’s not a billion people, but that’s still in the millions (Canada, Russia, Scandinavia etc.) We’d have to use the - sign every winter no matter which system we use, Celsius or Fahrenheit. Just like the billion+ people I talked about above.

People used to the Celsius system, especially those living in areas where it frequently goes below freezing, are well versed with the - symbol. We know the difference between -5 and -10 like we know between 0 and 5.

Again, Americans can keep their F and their LBs and their Miles and their every other unique charm. But it’s also funny when they try to prove that it’s somehow better or more natural. Like, it’s natural and rational to you.

In the words of mother:

“And you can tell me that you’re sorry

But I don't believe you, baby, like I did before

You're not sorry (No no no no)

You're not sorry (No no no no)"

Honestly? I’ve only lived in countries with Celsius and Celsius is how I feel. I know exactly how hot or cold a day is gonna be if I look up the temperature. Thats how I know what clothes to wear!!! But Fahrenheit confuses the shit out of me. Every time I visit the US, I always convert the temp back to Celsius when someone tells me the temp.

I know Fahrenheit has more degrees and that can give you more datapoints. But cmon. The temp only goes up to, like, 50 C anyways lol. How many degrees do you need 🤣. Can you really differentiate between 61 and 62 F? Now, 60 to 65 F might be believable, but that’s like 15 to 18 C so, that much difference is shown even in Celsius.

I’m not saying Celsius is better, or that Americans should convert to it. Actually, if I was God-Emperor, I’d force us all to use Kelvin,, given it begins with Absolute Zero and I’m a sucker for shit like that.

But variety is the spice of life. For Americans, Fahrenheit is how they feel. For most of the rest of us, it’s Celsius.

Well, I got into them when I was younger. My school required a MacBook and when I started using one, I found it way cooler than my clunky Windows laptop. Part of that was probably the price, but it was also the OS. It was really smooth - and I freaking fell in love with the touchpad gestures. Then I got an iPhone, an iPad etc.

Overtime, I moved away from an Apple only ecosystem. Now I use Linux on an XPS. I also use a Galaxy Tab instead - iPad, while powerful, is really hampered by its OS. Galaxy Tab is far more powerful and capable of being an actual laptop replacement, at least for me.

But I still use an iPhone. I find it a lot easier to deal with than Android. I tried the latter in the past, btw. But I don't need customization on my phone, unlike with my laptop or tablet. So, for my headphones, I got the AirPods. The connection between the iPhone and AirPods is really good.

Will my next phone be an iPhone. I dunno. There are some really interesting Android phones out there, and the platform seems more mature now with many companies offering a simple UI that doesn't do too much - I still keep up with it all. I liked the OnePlus Fold that came out recently, for example.

I'll admit, I'm not your average Apple user. I made a very deliberate choice to not be tied down to Apple. I've taken conscious actions to have different OSes and software on different devices and not be locked down by any one company. I use FOSS wherever I can, and moved away from all the default apps pushed by Apple, Samsung etc. long ago. It's also why I won't get a Galaxy phone - I already have the tablet. The only concession I allowed was the AirPods.

But I can tell you another example. Over the years, my father has needed new products. And every time I've gotten him Apple products. Now, he has an all Apple setup. MacBook, iPad, iPhone, AirPods. Why? Because I've seen him use Windows laptops and Android phones in the past. I know just how many problems he's had with them - and how much I had to help him with them. Now that he has an all Apple set up, everything is dead simple for him. People underestimate this.

Hope this helps answer your questions.

Here is the direct UN report - https://news.un.org/en/sites/news.un.org.en/files/atoms/files/Mission_report_of_SRSG_SVC_to_Israel-oWB_29Jan_14_feb_2024.pdf

Here's it's conclusion (edited for clarity):

October 7 and Hostages: Conflict-related sexual violence (genital mutilation, sexualized torture, or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment) occurred at several locations across the Gaza periphery, including in the form of rape and gang rape, during the 7 October 2023 attacks. Clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence (as described above) and reasonable grounds to believe that such violence is ongoing, including against women and children. Unable to establish the prevalence of sexual violence and concludes that the overall magnitude, scope, and specific attribution of these violations would require a fully-fledged investigation.

Occupied Palestinian Territory (i.e., conducted by Israel and settlers): They did not visit Gaza. Cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, including various forms of sexual violence towards detainees (39% of whom are held without trial). Invasive body searches including unwanted touching of intimate areas, including genitial areas, and forced unveiling of women wearing Hijab; beatings; threats of rape against women and threats of rape against female family members (wives, sisters, daughters) in the case of men; and inappropriate strip search and prolonged forced nudity of detainees, including during interrogation and during transfer to other detention facilities. Taking and circulating pictures of women detainees on personal phones of soldiers and investigators and depriving women of menstruation products. Sexual harassment and threats of rape, during house raids – including at night – and at checkpoints. Intimidation, including threats of rape, if conditions of detention were reported or publicly disclosed after liberation.

Three carriages of the passenger train....derailed when a second incoming train rammed into it from behind.... "Both the loco-pilot and co-pilot were distracted by the cricket match," Mr Vaishnaw said....Both of them lost their lives in the incident....A preliminary investigation by the railway authorities immediately after the incident found that the train had overshot a signal.

"Yeah, bro the two drivers who died were totes just 100% at fault and it had nothing to do at all with a larger systemic issue that might put me, the minister or the Indian govt. at fault for not improving the railway system. Nah, it's just those poor drivers who were too busy watching cricket."

Railways minister Vaishnaw said new safety systems would be installed following the incident to "detect any such distraction and make sure that the pilots and the assistant pilots are fully focussed on running the train".

And that would solve the issues, trust. It's the drivers, not the system.

India has one of the world's largest railway networks, which transports millions of passengers daily. But it has seen several disasters over the years... There have been several major accidents in the last 12 months, including a three-train collision which killed as many as 300 people in the eastern state of Odisha in June. Just last month, another incident on the railway saw a freight train travelled more than 70km (43.4 miles) without a driver. Footage on social media showed the 53-wagon train from Jammu and Kashmir zooming past several stations at high speed of nearly 100km/h, before arriving in Punjab. Officials told the PTI news agency: "The train was stopped after a railway official placed wood blocks on the tracks to stop the train."

Like... come the fuck on. Something clearly major fucked up is going on at a systemic fucking level here. I'm betting corruption. No doubt the drivers were not 100% innocent. But they're dead so they're being turned into the scapegoats, so people don't look into all these other incidents. Many countries have very large and extensively used railway systems that don't experience deadly crashes on the daily. Indians need to hold their politicians accountable.

Here you go, man.

Yuzu agrees to pay $2.4 million. Furthermore, it is ordered to be shut down, and its employees are prohibited from working in a similar capacity for any other emulator, too.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Literally no one on Twitter understands how anything works. Everyone in the quote replies is posting gifs saying Yuzu is gonna dunk on Nintendo, they're gonna show Nintendo who's boss, they're gonna this, they're gonna that... and I'm fucking losing my mind.

Of course I want Yuzu to win. Of course Nintendo wants to ends emulation and that's bad. But come the fuck on. Be realistic. This is not Google vs. Epic or even David vs. Goliath. This is like... the asteroid vs the dinosaurs. The only hope for Yuzu (and emulation) is that this asteroid misses the Earth, i.e., over the next 60 days, Nintendo somehow reaches a deal with the company and this doesn't go to court.

Because if it does, then I will get no enjoyment from being the one telling the geniuses on Twitter, "I told you so."
