Just curious to see what the demographic is on here and where abouts in the country are we all?

Finland. I was just browsing All and couldn't resist saying hello from pretty close to the other end of the planet.

We've heard a lot about you Finland! I keep (half) joking to my wife that we're casually going to move there..

One of the happiest places on earth apparently!

Is Australia considered a part of New Zealand? 😜

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago

Yep, the west island.

The beautiful Bay of Islands

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Oh hey neighbour! Well, probably anyway. There's only like 5 of us up here 😂

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Hiya, yes it’s a big area and only a few Lemmy’ists. Many years ago, there was a sub at "the other place" named Bay of Islands. Tried to contact the owner/mod to take it over, but never had any reply. Ah well.

Also known as Auckland 2.0 🤣

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

It's almost identical, but with better weather and we can afford petrol.

Canada, but NZ is on my bucket list.

Originally Invercargill, most recently Christchurch, currently Switzerland, soon to be Marlborough. Can't bloody wait.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Interesting, in my mind Switzerland is about as idyllic and picturesque as it gets..

Hard to imagine one longing for Marlborough from Switzerland, that said we do have a beautiful country ❤️

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been here for more than ten years now. It really is beautiful, and the opportunities to explore Europe have been incredible. But Switzerland is a notoriously unfriendly country and maintaining friendships here is work. Plus our parents are ageing, we miss being close to family, and I especially miss living by the ocean. Going back was always a possibility as an early retirement plan - it's also too expensive to retire in Switzerland.

Mountains and meadows are nice for a while, but driving six hours in the era of carbon footprint reduction to get to a warm bathtub (the Mediterranean) gets a bit stale.

(I might have some strong opinions)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Good on you mate, can I ask what you moved there for?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

We had a work opportunity that gave us the chance to live in any of a few different cities. We chose Switzerland so our kids could learn another language and we could travel from a fairly central location. Definitely achieved those!
