I avoid Twitter at any cost but sometimes I'd like to read a single tweet or check a certain account. In the past I used fritter on Android or nitter.net in the browser.

Both do not work for me anymore.

Is there a good way to access twitter without - you know - actually using twitter?

Unfortunately, no. Since the bird site started charging exorbitant amounts for access to its API, many of the smaller apps that used to work with it don't work anymore. You're honestly best staying off of twitter altogether. Don't give the Musk anything to monetize you.

I see, I wasn't aware of API changes.

They are what inspired Reddit. Terrible

Don't worry, the way things are going right now Twitter will be dead before long

I really hope so, but I'm not optimistic.

I don't have a facebook account either, but a large amount of business only have facebook pages and not their own webpage, which are now all hidden behind a login wall.

It's annoying when it's a tyre shop. But all too often twitter was/is the best way to contact government agencies and get a fast response. Eg. I had a tax issue, my country's tax agency has an account on twitter, you tweet them your problem, they reply.

Try https://bird.makeup/

It (somehow) acts as a bridge between Twitter and ActuvityPub. No idea how it works, but it does seem to work.

It depends on what instance you are trying to access it from. I tried to use it with my account on mastodon.social but they seem to have blocked it (you can check on the about page for your instance)

mstdn.social hasn’t blocked it though.

I find it strange because these instances don’t say anything about bots like this being against the rules.

I wasn’t aware of that. Good to know!

Hm, it throws an error for me when looking for a specific twitter handle.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I’m currently getting that too. Hopefully it’s a temporary glitch.

At least you can see a single tweet with a direct link without being logged in: https://youtu.be/e7QvBGouHtI?t=400

I use Squawker on Android to open timelines of specific accounts.

@wmrch fritter got a commit that fixed it recently, not sure when a new version will "officially" release but you can download the github actions apk for that commit and keep using fritter : https://github.com/jonjomckay/fritter/suites/14085021499/artifacts/787559184 :)

I use archive.is and if that doesn't work in the future, then you can always make a random account with a temp email and dispose of the account after you're done.

Wait they require a phone number now?

Well I signed up without a phone number, although they keep making me do a 15 captcha thing, so I just gave up after they failed me once.

Maybe Elon didn't pay the phone verification service so they turned it off.

With current rate limits, I doubt there will be a practical solution.

I primarily use sotwe.com. Nitter used to be my go-to but it had some issues with displaying age-restricted tweets.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I use RSS for some specific accounts.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How? I had to use nitter to get rss feeds of accounts and this is now obviously dead.

I open the account in browser and paste the adress to feedbro.
