Should I bother learning Podman? (lemmy.goblackcat.com)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I am already fairly comfortable using docker and its tool set. Is the tide shifting towards Podman? Should I start learning how to use Podman? Thanks in advance.

While reddit makes further enemies, I laugh because I know the #fediverse will benefit from their outflow. The fediverse will become even more diverse.

Get an advanced education, work harder, never be the one to say, "That is not my job" was the worst advice I could ever receive. I got into debt and was abused and exploited by my employers.

WebPush Desktop Notifications (lemmy.goblackcat.com)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Are WebPush desktop notifications currently implemented in Lemmy? I run my own instance and I am not getting any. I have given the lemmy website permissions to send notifications but none are coming through. I am running Lemmy behind a reverse proxy and I've put the NGINX headers in to allow for WebSockets. What else could I be missing? Thanks in advance.

Typical fear of missing out behavior. Folks flock to Threads to see what it's all about, see that it actually sucks, and bail.

My database is already getting to the size of almost 1GB so it made me think about some questions I have regarding maintenance of my Lemmy instance:

  • What cleanup is recommended on the database?
  • What is the default length of time that pictrs holds onto its cached data and how to clear the cache?
  • Any other recommendations you can think of?

As long as employment is at will, I will say fuck you to employers as quickly as they say fuck you to me. That's the way it works. You want loyalty, show some in return.

I am no doctor but I remember hearing one of the warning signs of depression can be the absence of feeling. It is certainly one of mine.

I like the idea of a federated, ActivityPub-based version control systems that work with git. Here lies the problem: Microsoft has not done quite enough to inflict pain on developers just yet. As I begrudgingly concede, MS has been by and large friendly to github members, even the non-paying ones.

Has anybody else had issues with Mastodon and desktop webpush notifications? I have them enabled on my PC's web browser, Firefox. I made certain to allow notifications. Yet, I don't get any. I read somewhere that regenerating the vapid key pair can fix the problem so I did this but still nothing. I welcome any ideas.

I am running the latest version of Cinnamon on my Arch desktop with the latest version of Firefox. However, I am not receiving notifications from websites that I have expressly enabled notifications on. For example, my Mastodon instance doesn't give me notifications when something has been favorited or boosted. For that matter neither does my Lemmy instance. I have given these instances the proper permissions to allow notifications and still nothing. This happens with some other websites but it is hit and miss.

As I am not so familiar with the innards of Cinnamon, would somebody be so kind as to point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

I just found out about The Odin Project, a self-paced online course to learn full stack web development. There are two paths: one is Ruby on Rails and the other is full JavaScript and nodejs. I am leaning more towards Ruby but I wanted to get some more opinions from folks in the field.

Email self-hosting (lemmy.goblackcat.com)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

As the title reads, I really want to begin hosting my own email server again. I'm sick of the poor quality of the service providers out there. Damnit all I want/need is a reliable IMAP/SMTP provider. I spent 3 hours getting off of Hostinger and on to Zoho. I just hope Zoho won't suck. It's great for now but we'll see.

Is the prevailing advice still not to bother with self-hosting email?

I am wondering what kind of career moves I have available to me because I am over the bullshit of desktop support. I have been brushing up on my Linux skills, learning docker, and doing a whole bunch of networking-related things. At this point, I am 46 years old. Would it benefit me to go back to school to learn a skill to help me advance beyond this role? I just don't know what to do. There are many options, none of them truly low cost and all of them involving a significant amount of risk.

I get that there is no avoiding risk when making a career change so late in life. I was looking at training for Java or Oracle and it isn't cheap. Maybe given my experience I could teach A+ or Network+? I don't know. I'll welcome any ideas right now.

I'm really liking the Liftoff app for Lemmy. I just discovered that I can increase the indent so comment replies are easy to read.

As my question reads I am curious if the Lemmy documentation gurus are putting together any recommended instance maintenance tasks. Also are the devs going to implement something similar to Mastodon which has the tootctl command and some various cache maintenance and cleanup capability. Thanks in advance. 😀

I absolutely refuse to use TikTok but let's be honest here in that our own politicians and the decisions that they make that are anti-working class and anti-poor are more of a national security threat than TikTok.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy another inkjet printer, let alone a shitty HP product. Definitely get yourself a Brother laser printer. Brothers are bulletproof.

That sounds a lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Oracle is nothing but a bunch of stark hypocrites. They have absolutely nothing to say on the subject matter of FOSS and open and fair competition. This is just peak corporatism. Oracle is the king of proprietary. They've done NOTHING to contribute to open source. They take, take, take!

Oracle weighing in on anything open source related is peak hypocrisy. Fuck Oracle. They're not our friends.

Building home page feed (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

Other than subscribing to communities, how else can I expand my feed some? I just started working with Lemmy over the weekend and I'd like to see comments from more than just the communities I subscribe to so that I can learn about others.

More to the point: where does anybody go for any reliable news? It seems like most news is now using hyperbole to make it entertainment. We have old man Rupert to thank for basically destroying a respected profession. That's my 0.02 anyhow.

[-] [email protected] 62 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately, no. Since the bird site started charging exorbitant amounts for access to its API, many of the smaller apps that used to work with it don't work anymore. You're honestly best staying off of twitter altogether. Don't give the Musk anything to monetize you.
