I'm not sure they can with this though.

There's zero benefit for anyone that would be using mastodon to switch to their service. If anything, you'd use theirs to build a following, then dump them in favor of mastodon and bring your followers with you because that's a thing you can do.

Mind you, I'm fine with anyone and everyone defederating from them the second they try to federate, as a matter of principle, but there's not a significant risk of them being able to crush mastodon at all.
