Anything more than a handful of nukes are nothing but a money drain and maintenance nightmare.
They can never be used without the expectation of massive retaliation in kind.
A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I think you're missing the point of MAD. The entire reason of having a nuclear arsenal is so that you can retaliate in case anyone is using nukes against you.
With a "handful" of nukes you can't even outfit a single ICBM with warheads.
So no, having a handful of nukes is utterly pointless, because you can't use them and you can't deter anyone from using nukes against you. Even having 500 seems to be very much on the low side if you want to deter a country with sophisticated anti-missile system like the US.
That seems kind of low, or is it just me?
Quick google search says Russia is around 5,977 nukes and the US has 5,428.
I don't believe this is classified but the United States keeps about 1700 nuclear weapons active located in ground and submarine ICBM's or in cruise missiles at bomber bases. The rest are in storage. The United States regularly tests the delivery systems as does China. Russia hasn't had a successful launch in several years.
I don't believe this is classified but
"Not sure, might be spilling nuclear secrets here, but fuck it, I really wanna reply to this Lemmy comment."
When did Lemmy evolve into a War Thunder forum?
China has always kept their nuclear force rather limited in number. Only recently have they started expanding their stockpile.
It still enough to cause a nuclear fallout if both side launch at each other, and they're targeting 1.5k, the same amount that US has which is ready to deploy.
I thought we're cutting down on nuclear weapon but ehh, this global warming could makes one wish for a nuclear winter.
Oh, definitely, I was just surprised because I figured China would be closer to both Russia and the US.
Quick google search
Those number were also in the article...
I believe those are total numbers, so that includes both operational warheads (ready to launch) and stored warheads. The article here is specifically referring to the number of operational warheads China has, which is still much lower than that of Russia and the US, but the gap isn’t quite as wide as 500-6,000
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The latest assessment from the defense department said China had increased its arsenal of operational nuclear warheads from the estimated 400 in 2021 to more than 500 as of May this year.
"It is a complete transformation of China's approach to nuclear weapons," says M. Taylor Fravel, a professor of political science who specializes in security studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Pentagon's annual report on China began in 2000, and despite current hot wars in both Ukraine and now the Middle East, the Pentagon assessment is closely watched as national security concerns on China continue to drive U.S. defense budgets and training priorities.
Analysts said the move demonstrated how Beijing's military might blockade Taiwan and cut it off from critical energy supplies in the future.
The Pentagon report noted that "the PLA is preparing for a contingency to unify Taiwan with the PRC by force if perceived as necessary by Beijing," using an acronym for the People's Republic of China.
Those were demonstrated in certain respects during their response to the then-Speaker Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, to President Tsai's transit of the United States," the senior defense official said, but also noted that the "PRC still perceives that they have some shortcomings that they have yet to fully address."
