About:

This sublemmy is a place for sharing news and discussions about artificial intelligence, core developments of humanity's technology and societal changes that come with them. Basically futurology sublemmy centered around ai but not limited to ai only.

Rules:
  1. Posts that don't follow the rules and don't comply with them after being pointed out that they break the rules will be deleted no matter how much engagement they got and then reposted by me in a way that follows the rules. I'm going to wait for max 2 days for the poster to comply with the rules before I decide to do this.
  2. No Low-quality/Wildly Speculative Posts.
  3. Keep posts on topic.
  4. Don't make posts with link/s to paywalled articles as their main focus.
  5. No posts linking to reddit posts.
  6. Memes are fine as long they are quality or/and can lead to serious on topic discussions. If we end up having too much memes we will do meme specific singularity sublemmy.
  7. Titles must include information on how old the source is in this format dd.mm.yyyy (ex. 24.06.2023).
  8. Please be respectful to each other.
  9. No summaries made by LLMs. I would like to keep quality of comments as high as possible.
  10. (Rule implemented 30.06.2023) Don't make posts with link/s to tweets as their main focus. Melon decided that the content on the platform is going to be locked behind login requirement and I'm not going to force everyone to make a twitter account just so they can see some news.
  11. No ai generated images/videos unless their role is to represent new advancements in generative technology which are not older that 1 month.
  12. If the title of the post isn't an original title of the article or paper then the first thing in the body of the post should be an original title written in this format "Original title: {title here}".
  13. Please be respectful to each other.

We aim to curate content that truly contributes to the understanding and practical application of AI, making it, as the name suggests, “actually useful” for developers and enthusiasts alike.)

Note:

My posts on this sub are currently VERY reliant on getting info from r/singularity and other subreddits on reddit. I'm planning to at some point make a list of sites that write/aggregate news that this subreddit is about so we could get news faster and not rely on reddit as much. If you know any good sites please dm me.

Definitely AI generated art. If you asked me 3-4 years ago I'd tell you there is no way neural networks would understand how to generate a nice looking image. The fact that high quality AI art is way less expensive computationally than generating text still confuses me. Like, I can generate beautiful 1024x1024 images within seconds but this text generation model needs 20gb of vram? Huh?!

thispersondoesnotexist.com has been around since 2019

The idea for so long was that creative professionals would be safe from automation (writing, drawing, painting, etc) has turned out to be so wrong it's sad.

Nobody is safe. I'm only hoping to get ahead just a little bit to pay off my debts before I suddenly can't find good work.

[–] Zeppo 1 points 1 year ago

I amazed at what image generation can come up with, too.

Ai near perfectly replicating voices and creating fantastic looking art within the span of it being a joke to very impressive in like 1~2 years.

Also Ai chat models being able to hold a decent conversation and not be gibberish or obviously inhuman is very impressive.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Most humans only know how to repeat short, smart sounding talking points. It makes sense that AI have been able to replicate that. Ai chat bots sound like they're saying a lot, but really say anything. Political speech writers will be out of a job first.

They write like corporate middle managers

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Someone once posted that they got GPT to produce much higher quality output by instructing it to make an argument, critique that argument, make a new argument with the critique in mind, and so on.

Maybe stable, precise reasoning is just a result of multiple language models arguing with each other.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

yeah probably asking for more detail helps. GPT is limited in output length, so arguing and going to the detail will produce better output

To me it's been audiobooks and youtube videos where I can no longer tell if it's an AI or a person speaking.

Yeah people use AI to make yt videos.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Five Finger Family has been speculated to be partially created by AI. It's a nonsense channel aimed at children. There's also Nothing Forever or dragonball_ai which are more parodies that will have a short life span.

The sudden explosion in ai popularity when chatGPT came out. I didn't expect to see this topic going mainstream for ~~meny~~ many more years before that happened.

How much people mistake AI for real intelligence.

Two things, related to LLMs:

  1. How reasonable and usable it is or seems when all it does is predicting the next word.
  2. How good it is at coding and explaining programming concepts.
[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It makes me wonder if the aspect of human intelligence we consider the general part, is anything other than text prediction.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

AIs coding/scripting is incredible, but that's likely just because there is so much shared scripting available to munch on. AI is just faster at doing the Google search I do to steal someone else's work.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They're getting so good at understanding what I want, there are times I've spent hours googling obscure search terms trying to work out the library I need but a brief description of what I need into one of the LLMs and it'll just tell me

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

You're not wrong, it saves me tons of time scripting.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

The fact that it's already being commercialiased in such a massive way. That it's to the point where it's everyday use is sitting firmly in the public sphere and so is being used by millions of people around the world, not just in a specialised way, but to visualise all sorts of goofy things. I find that amazing. Regular people know what ChatGPT is. Perhaps not Midjourney and the hundred other products, but the fact that they know about one of them already is evidence, to me at least, of just how fast this things moves.

How quickly open source large language models that you can run on consumers hardware caught up with gpt-3

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that was bonkers

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

AI being able to write code.

DALL-E was the first development which shocked me. AlphaGo was very impressive on a technical level, and much earlier than anticipated, but it didn't feel different.
GANs existed, but they never seemed to have the creativity, nor understanding of prompts, which was demonstrated by DALL-E. Of all things, the image of an avocado-themed chair is still baked into my mind. I remember being gobsmacked by the imagery, and when I'd recovered from that, just how "simple" the step from what we had before to DALL-E was.
The other thing which surprised me was the step from image diffusion models to 3D and video. We certainly haven't gotten anywhere near the quality in those domains yet, but they felt so far from the image domain that we'd need some major revolution in the way we approached the problem. The thing which surprised me the most was just how fast the transition from images to video happened.

There’s a subreddit called AIgreentext.

The night I discovered it, I spent about half an hour reading them. Each one was the best one I’d ever read. They had me laughing so hard that I had to put my phone down for fear of a heart attack. Like I was seriously worried about sudden death I was laughing so hard.

I’ve never laughed like that in my life. I didn’t know such laughed was possible. I’m not exaggerating: I stopped because I was scared of literally dying of laughter.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Can confirm. Just opened it up, first time I lol at greentext in years.

Some of the AI generated art has been beautiful.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Exponential curve on a logarithmic axis? Now I've seen it all.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

That intelligence chart is pretty fucking bad tho

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The simultaneous nuance and beauty of the art coupled with inability to get hands right. It's both humorous and chilling.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It is.

An ai is such a "different" mind. It may seem like us, it might tick some boxes that we do too, but (like the hands example) there might just be one small thing it does very differently. In the hands example, it doesn't have much consequence - but as AI has more control over daily life (insurance, route planning, healthcare, political foreign policy, lawmaking) some of these "it's not human" hand-problems might have far reaching implications for society

I'm amazed how how human Pi AI feels. If you haven't tried yet, I highly recommend it!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

That was pretty cool.

my chat

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I tried to convince it that killing Hitler would be fine but it kept crying about nuance and being against violence.
